For this purchase I checked bank value and Edmunds for true market pricing, both were $6k+ above the dealers price.

RMS was replaced under CPO certification and no recurring leaks, yet.

Although I rarely have enough time to "enjoy" shopping for major purchases I do check the basics.

Next shoot I will definitely set the camera to low res.

I was looking at the new MB C350...test drove it and liked it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all,
I purchased a 2004 996 C2 about one month ago and have been reviewing the the rennlist and renntech boards. About the car: Artic Silver metallic over black standard interior, 6 spd, PSM, PSE, 030 sport suspension, flared rocker panels, 18" carrera wheels with color crest inserts, carbon fiber shifter and brake handle, Bose upgraded stereo, xenon head lights, power seats, heated seats, 24,500 miles. Purchased Certified Pre-Owned from local Porsche dealer. Warranty through 1/2010 or 100,000 miles. Price $53k. Overall car is in very good condition, no body dents or dings, just the expected stone chips, interior like new with the exception of a cracked shifter ****. And everything does work.
RMS was replaced under CPO certification and no recurring leaks, yet. I put a little over 2,500 miles on her so far and all fluid levels are stable. It does need a 4th gear synchro which the dealer will handle under warranty whenever I decide to part with the car for a few days. Synchro only grinds when driven to the plus side of hard, which I rarely do. (I know, that synchro probably says something about the driving style of the po)
So, after reading a ton of posts about reliability concerns, failed engines, multiple RMS replacements, and then..... depreciation and low market prices... I just need to ask if the deal I got is in line with the market. I know it's a subjective question and market value is whatever someone is willing to pay, but when I see $30k for a 996 thrown around so often, I just have to wonder.
Doesn't matter at this point as I own it, drive it every day, and enjoy it.
My only previous Porsche was a 1968 911L - with a sportomatic trans back in the early 70's. Not much of a comparison to the 996, I don't even miss the oil smell circulating inside the car.
I'd appreciate any opinions, good or not so good.
Thanks
Enjoy your car. Drive it.
Don't ask the question of price, as it can only bring regret and second-guessing. All that matters is that you got a car that you like and you were willing to pay for.
Welcome! Post some pics as soon as you have enough posts!
Your purchase price sounds very fair for a low mileage '04 C2. Especially considering all the options on your car.
The RMS problem does not suprise me, but everything I have read about the new seal indicates that your chance of a reoccurance is very low. The syncro problem is rare (but as you indicated who knows how the PO drove it). Get it fixed and enjoy.
My 986 and 996 have been two of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. Congrats on your purchase.
Welcome to Rennlist!
Welcome, and congrats on your purchase. I recently paid $47k for an '02 c4 cab, so it seems like you did just fine. Facelift models should certainly command a higher price, and regional markets will vary.
Welcome....looks like you did pretty well on your deal. And if the synchro is covered, no big deal. Were you looking here on RL at all before you bought? Lots of good deals to be had here, so pass the word around to your friends if they are seeking a car. I know Tim here has a fantastic deal on an 04 as well.
J
well, you are always going to pay a little more at the dealer, but then you can sleep soundly with your CPO warranty! Sounds like a well optioned car. Did anyone say "PICS"?????
(Ahem, Tim, you're on cue)
Silotwo - First off, Welcome to Rennlist, as a Member no less! It's not often we get someone who is a Member when they have their first post. Congrats on getting your '04 C2!
Pics?? Did someone say PICS???? Silotwo - It is customary for "newbies" to tell us a little about their car and to post a couple of pics of their cars. Your car sure "sounds" nece bet we haven't seen it yet.
I don't really care much for pics
, but these other guys always make me do this! ===>
Come on "Newbie", post up the !@#$*%^& pics!
As you can tell we LOVE pics here and this is just our (ok, my) way of having a little initiation for the "newbies!"
Again, Welcome to the Porsche Phunny Pharm!
Thanks everyone for your posts! I appreciate the info. I'll post pics as soon as I take some, and after my membership log-in is straightened out so I can post them.
P Dealer in HI had two 04 996 C2 coupes that weren't selling at their mid $50's price- silver 10k miles, & black 25K miles- not many options- price dropped till they got to $47,950 for few weeks & both sold- .
In June, I picked up 02 996 with 16K from local owner i knew for $41.5- not many options & 17" wheels- Just love it & thought i got it for nice price-- As i watched price go down on the 04 CPO at the dealier didn't feel as good.
As said in earlier post, don't worry if someone else got it for less- you own it, paid a fair price- drive and enjoy.
I just put X-74 suspension & hard rubber motor mounts from Carnewal on mine-- it transformed the car- so much better handling,& it is not to low or harsh for our Honolulu rough roads- its a perfect suspension- can say enough positive about the ride/handling.
Took some pics but they are too large to use the Rennlist upload feature, so I am experimenting. If no pic comes through or we get gibberish, I apologize in advance.

Great looking car,
Do not worry about the price just enjoy...I bought mine a month ago and love it, I bought my 2003 from a dealer with 18K miles + CPO and already put 1400 miles on it...I love the flared rocker panels on your car (oh no, why did I say that - here comes a mod ) can those be added to a 2003 c2? ...
Ok, to make you feel better, I bought my car in April with 73000 miles, 90 day warranty, 50 large. '02 C4S, but I liked the factory aero. Has been as reliable as a Toyota after 5000 more miles.
I fugure I could get about 35k for it now. But I don't care. Well, maybe a little, but I don't think about it. Ok, I obviously think about it, but what the hell. It is almost a turbo.
Very nice! Congrats. Don't sweat the price or what others are paying. You got the car you wanted, and that's all that matters.

Oh, although Halloween is just a few weeks away, I say the pumpkins should go
Thanks. I already did the SSK, couldn't pass on the deal, paid $340.00 for the OEM and dealer installed at no charge....long story. It has the PSE and M030 so I think I am good. PSE sounds great and neighbors seem more pleased with it than they are with my Sporty and open pipes.
And here are a few more pics.
Thanks for the pics of the 'back' and somewhat side of the car...so far from that it looks good. But let's see some pics of the front or is there a problem with it
So he says he wants pics , so I post pics, now he wants more, so here are more..... Only problem I found with the front is that it is not yellow:
Next shoot I will definitely set the camera to low res.
Thanks everyone. You made me dust off the camera and have some fun, and I learned how to do a few things in the process.
I appreciate the pricing feed back and support. Although I rarely have enough time to "enjoy" shopping for major purchases I do check the basics. For this purchase I checked bank value and Edmunds for true market pricing, both were $6k+ above the dealers price. Shopped the internet for CPO's similarly equipped and all were $60k+, without all of the options. Heck, I even test drove a base Cayman and as impressed as I was with how balanced and well mannered the Caymen was, as soon as my brain said "darn, my wife would love this car" I knew it wasn't what I was really looking for. I really wanted a 911 and I got what I really wanted, and that's what really matters in this case.
Thanks again, great forum.
I got lucky and found a 50k 2003 C2 with not as much options as you have. I got away with it for 43k but you got a newer yr with more options, below the blue book msrp so don't sweat it man. You did good! The way I look at it is, for what I paid...I got more luxury and sports car than spending the same money on something else. I was looking at the new MB C350...test drove it and liked it. I test drove the porsche and I thought to myself, screw the sedan! Just not my style and left with the porsche.
