I use Mobil 15W50 in my GT3 because of all the track work I do - I also change the oil & filter every 6K miles.

Apparently Halfords are claiming on their website that they will check engine oils levels FOC and top up for £1.99.

Which oil would you recommend for topping up my 996 C4S.
If it was my decision, I'd go with the Supersyn 5W40 as a good compromise but IMHO the best investment of all is to change the oil & filter every 6K miles.

My car has only covered 23k so just loosening up I suppose so shall I stick with the 15w-50 as what's in, use 0w-40 as per fitted at the factory or use the Supersyn 5w-40?

From what I've read and heard, the M.96 engine typically uses a bit of oil early on in it's life, and then settles down to a very low consumption after 15-20,000 miles.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Which oil would you recommend for topping up my 996 C4S. I have heard Mobil 1 0w-40 my local indy said they would use Mobil 1 15w-50. thoughts please and cheapest place to get it. tried searching for previous threads so I do not bore everybody again but unsuccessful. Thanks.
You need top up with the same grade as what is in already.
People and garages fill with dfferent grades and manufacturers oils
Rumour is Costco is the cheapest but halfords stock most of what you may need
All oils can be sourced on line.
Buy a big carton it works out cheaper.
I have only had the car for 3 months and was last serviced at Strasse and they are the ones who suggested the 15w-50, so i guess that is th eone to use then. I will look at halfords and then try a friend who has a Costco card. What is the aveerage estimated useage per 1000 mile, I have heard 0.5 litres?
I had my 996 C2 for 35000 miles (51 to 86k), and I NEVER had to top it up between oil changes, which I did every 6000 miles. From what I've read and heard, the M.96 engine typically uses a bit of oil early on in it's life, and then settles down to a very low consumption after 15-20,000 miles.
Top up with the same make and viscosity of what's in there. I am surprised that Strasse use M1 5W-50, as most indies who use M1 use 0W-40, as that's what the factory fill it with. I think I'd be tempted to ask 'why?'
I use Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40. It definitely helped reduce the occasion startup clatter and occasional startup puff of smoke. Maybe that's why they used 5W-50.
0.5l/1000miles would be a helluva lot IMO.
BTW, Costco only do M1 0W-40.
I use Mobil 15W50 in my GT3 because of all the track work I do - I also change the oil & filter every 6K miles. It's a motorsport oil and is what my Indie Fearnsport recommend for tracked GT3's & Turbo's.
For a C4S, I would go with Richard's suggestion of using Supersyn 5W40 - we both used it in our previous 996's and were very happy with it.

One of our forum buddies, Ian Howells, can get Mobil 1 much cheaper than normal high street prices. This thread will help:

Strasse said the use 15w-50 as it is used for racing and if you 'drive' the car then the oil is fine. My car has only covered 23k so just loosening up I suppose so shall I stick with the 15w-50 as what's in, use 0w-40 as per fitted at the factory or use the Supersyn 5w-40? As just for topping up, if I will need to as only doing 8-10k pa, will it matter until next oil change in probably Dec\Jan?
I'd be inclined to buy a decent quantity of whatever you intend to run it on long-term. As long as it's a fully synthetic, it shouldn't make very much difference mixing it with the existing oil for top-ups. If it was my decision, I'd go with the Supersyn 5W40 as a good compromise but IMHO the best investment of all is to change the oil & filter every 6K miles.
Just came across this post, as I was looking for oils etc.
Apparently Halfords are claiming on their website that they will check engine oils levels FOC and top up for £1.99. Based on cost of Mobil 1, and need to top up 0.5-1.0L of oil, sounds too good to be true or do you think they'll top up with cooking oil?
