I guess I'm not surprised that I'm going to need a scanner specific to Porsche for setting codes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2003 996 turbo. I'd like to buy a good code reader that would work well for that Porsche and would also be fine for a couple of late model American cars, including a 2013 Buick. Are there any recommendations? Thanks. Komac

For a general purpose "global" OBD II scanner, look at the Actron line. Like all other global units, they will not be able to address Porsche specific codes (air bags, service interval resets, etc.) and will not be able to read certain critical diagnostic data (cam deviation values, etc.). They will also work on any post 1996 car sold in North America. To be able to read and reset all Porsche codes, you need a Porsche specific tool like the Durametric or PIWIS system, but these are Porsche only and will not work on the Buick.

Thanks JFP. I'll take a look on ebay. I guess I'm not surprised that I'm going to need a scanner specific to Porsche for setting codes. Thanks again. Komac

POST 4Original post

You'll find PWIS on eBay. Has anyone had any luck setting up the cheap eBay pwis systems?

Most of the cheap PIWIS units off flea bay are actually ripped off clones of an old, out of date, and no longer supported Durametric system.
