Can you have someone sit in the car while using the Halo extinguiser (I know that the navy uses them on boats and that is takes the oxygen out of the fire) but don't know if this is very local or really just takes all the oxygen out of the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After reading 2 post within a month about fires in P-cars, I don't want to go in the category of "I told you so" and need to get extinguisers. Someone posted something about halo extinguisers......if you know where to buy online (or store) let me know. Better safe than sorry. maybe someone can answer me this: Your driving in your car...(an SUV) baby in the back.....your dashboard lights on fire....what do you do? 1. grab the extinguiser from under your seat and extinguis OR 2. get the baby out first and let the fire take the car? I would do the 2nd but thinking about the time it takes you could have probably gotten ride of a minor fire..... Can you have someone sit in the car while using the Halo extinguiser (I know that the navy uses them on boats and that is takes the oxygen out of the fire) but don't know if this is very local or really just takes all the oxygen out of the car. (small space)

POST 2Original post

ALWAYS get the child out first, PERIOD! Then if you can, try to extinguish the fire. It's only a car and you can replace it. You can't replace a child who has died. Unfortunately, I know this first hand, but not due to a car fire or an accident. Everything in you life can be replaced, EXCEPT for your children! Even your wife can be replaced, but your children are truly IRREPLACABLE!

POST 5Original post

I recently bought a 6 lb. Halon tank from Gene who visits these boards often. He sells full refills, at a much better deal, and they should last about 6 years before they need to be "reinspected". I got mine for $109 shipped, much much more reasonable than buying a new one. As long as the valve is working properly, it really doesn't need to be a brand new tank. He also advised me that a small tank, like a 2.5 lb. really won't be enough in the event you really need to use it. Here is his email.....his communication is fantastic and he really knows his stuff. He'll answer any issues you might have. [email removed] Best of luck, Jon

POST 7Original post

Never be in a room, or enclosed space near a halon extinguisher when it goes off. The heat of the flames will degrade the halon gas to some pretty nasty toxic materials that you do not want to breathe. Halon has been on it's way out for several years for this exact reason. I will never use one. For me it's either CO2 or dry powder.

POST 8Original post

If you do use the dry powder, be prepared for one miserable cleanup! Stuff is highly corrosive! Secondly, if halon or halotron was so bad, why would they make it standard equipment on every Lear Jet?

POST 9Original post

Let me refer you to what the government has to say on this: http://erd.dli.mt.gov/safetyhealth/brochures/halon.pdf "The five above mentioned halon types have a low toxicity but proper precautions must be taken if an employee is exposed, especially to decomposition products. Other types of halon are more toxic (Halon 1001- methyl bromide and Halon 1011 - Chlorobromomethane), and may still be in use today. If the halon system in your worksite contains Halon 1001, Halon 1011, or other unmentioned types, you must obtain information about them to protect your employees accordingly. Unnecessary exposure of personal to either the natural agent of decomposition products should be avoided. Decomposition results from exposure of the agent to fire or other hot surfaces. Halon is about five times heavier than air and will settle to the bottom of enclosed or confined spaces." and "Decomposition products of halon can be very toxic. The decomposition takes place when halon is exposed to a flame or to a hot surface at or above 900 degrees F. During decomposition the atoms of the halon molecule breakdown and can create high concentrations of toxic gases. Before entering into an area where a large fire was extinguished, toxic atmosphere tests should be done to ensure safe entry and occupancy of the area." The newer extinguishers are better than the older ones, as they have a lower concentration of halon in them, but the potential for harm is still there. Feel free to have it in your jet, but personally, I would not. The decomposition products are nasty (take it from me I'm a chemist) and I would not breathe them in. I could also argue that if you have a fire on a sealed flying cyclinder, then you have bigger problems at hand anyways. My personal view on this is who cares if the clean-up is messy - you have a fire that is going to cause a mess anyway - any attempts to prevent that can just be viewed as futile misguided vanity.

POST 10Original post

I find it interesting that you side with our Government, one of the largest polluters in the world! They have brought us many wonderful things like 'agent orange' and now they are giving mystery shots to our troops to supposedly fight anthrax!

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 4623083

Stop being a troll. Scientific fact is not changed by the source of the information. Where the information came from is irrelevant it does not change the fact that halon degrades to produce toxic fumes. The government did not come up with the information - it is widely documented in the scientific literature and has been known for decades. Your comments are totally irrelevant to the discussion of fire extinguishers.

POST 12Original post

This is the one I got: Chrome Amerex 2.5lb Halon 1211 Fire extinguisher with gloss black vehical/aircraft double strap mounting bracket. The model number is C352TSC. Looks real cool especially in a black interior.

POST 13Original post

Wellard....can you honestly say that you would rather sacrifice your engine or interior or entire car for a "safer" to the environment extinguisher that would spray for a few seconds over dealing with a burned up car? Not trying to start a "flame" war, but the way I look at it is that I would think that the Halon extinguisher would be less harmful to the atmosphere than a burning engine with oil and fuel emmsions being spewed into the air over a MUCH longer period of time. I'm all for keeping the environment a cleaner place.....but I also don't want to lose my car if I'm able to save it in a faster way. J

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 4624567

Environment has nothing to do with it. Nada. There are 2 issues: 1) the decomposition products of halon are nasty and will harm you if you inhale them. 2) other extinguishers will work equally effectively, so why insist on halon? Hey, I've not said that you shouldn't use one if you want to, but me personally, knowing what that stuff is, the nasty stuff it produces, and how toxic it is, then I would never use one. I work in an industry that is very safety conscious and we have virtually eliminated Halon of all types - I have not seen one of those extinguishers in at least 10 years.
