Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If the fuse keeps blowing then you need to get an auto electrician to check things out before you cause any damage - unless you know how to diagnose things yourself.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 4 relays, the car will drive' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dme-mfi relay in position 1' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check things out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suspected cause
If it was a relay, I would suspect the DME-MFI relay in position 1 on the relay panel behind the seats.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Model & Year?
C1 is the fuse for engine electronics. Which relays have you changed? If it was a relay, I would suspect the DME-MFI relay in position 1 on the relay panel behind the seats.
The smoke sounds worrying. Offhand, the only engine-related things I can think of in that area are the cooling fans (which have their own fuses & relays) and the EVAP canister up near the fuel filler.
The fuses are there to protect your wiring loom, battery, alternator and ultimately prevent a fire. If the fuse keeps blowing then you need to get an auto electrician to check things out before you cause any damage - unless you know how to diagnose things yourself. It is likely that you have a short to earth, or maybe a component failure that is shorting to earth. :?:
blowing fuse
car is a 2000 reg 996 carrera, have put it on a diagnostic machine, but once you put a new fuse in and get the car going it wipe out any fault reading, could the smoke come from the fuel pump wire going to earth and the smoke coming out near the drivers front wheel...regards colin
The fuel pump is inside the fuel tank, centre of car, and the access hatch is underneath the battery. If the smoke is coming from the wheel arch, I don't think is is from the fuel pump.
Codes may disappear when fuse C1 blows, because that is giving the supply to the DME, hence the memory will be lost.
I think I'd be tempted to strip out the driver's front wheel arch liner, and take a good poke around behind it.
fuses keep a going
hi richard, have pulled drivers side front wheel area apart and there aint alot of wires around that area, i am starting to run out of ideas, the trouble is if i take it into main dealer they cant really give me a price on fixing it cuz it could take days to track it down,
Like I said, the only thing I can think of in that area is the shut off valve on the carbon (EVAP) canister up near the fuel filler neck.
Why even consider a main dealer? Find a decent indy, and you will instantly halve the cost. (At least).
Just a thought, but if you connected a code reader to it and then drove it, could you not read the codes before it blew the fuse. I don't know if a tester can read live codes.
blowing fuse
did take it to indy dealer, had it for about 3 days and the fault never showed, but they were a ok garage to deal with, they said its hard to find it if it as it is a intermittent fault...........
