I have a 2010
987.2
and recently my temperature gauge went to dead stop cold with the overheat light red hot but the engine totally cold. I shut down the engine immediately after maybe ten seconds, checked the coolant level and noticed the coolant below the refill marker in the trunk-tank. Topped up the collant and no change. I would like to start with replacing the sender or sensor behind the drivers seat but cannot figure out how to unplug the wire(s). Any help wotul be greatly appreciated. 1st time post................ Cheers
Hi
forrestkhaag
- Sorry you're having issues. I too have a 2010 987.2; this seems to me that this must be an electrical issue if it is sending false info (hot when the sensor is cold). I'm guessing the coolant is just fine. If it were me, before I did anything, I'd be running a PIWIS test to see if you've thrown any codes and to test the sensor before disturbing any wiring; I'd want to see if the car is able to communicate with it.
Although you've been online here for a while, and as you haven't posted before (I just deleted your double-post), please be sure to take a moment to introduce yourself in the New Members area as that's a major tradition here (including photos of your ride)!
Cheers and let us know how you get on - hopefully it'll be quickly sorted. Cheers.
Hi..
Question - have you taken a look at the reservoir? That's where the sensor is. Is the level above the sensor? Topping off up top doesn't necessarily mean any of that fluid gets down to the reservoir. There is an intermediate cap between the reservoir and the fill cap. What has to happen is the coolant has to get hot, expand a bit, push air out past the cap on the reservoir, and then when it cools down it will suck coolant down into the reservoir.
The caps are a known problem point on these cars. If you're on originals, I'd replace both the one in the engine compartment and the one on the filler tube. It's entirely possible that the vent back into the reservoir on the cap has plugged up and isn't allowing the fluid to actually get down to the reservoir.
Once you're sure the reservoir is full, then it's time to think about unplugging wires and such.
Part #3 is the inner cap. Part #2 is the level sensor. The arrow is pointing to a bleed release, used when the system is warmish to get air out of the reservoir.
Good luck, and do visit the
