Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I would say my 996 is the quietest of them all, and I've got the what I think is called the valvetronic factory system (quiet/loud setting.) I can confidently say it is great for long drives.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am curious if anyone has any feedback or opinions on the relative cabin noise between a 997 coupe, 997 cabriolet, and a G50 coupe? The comparison would be with windows closed, top up, sunroof closed, etc... Specifically, I currently own a 1987 coupe and the cabin noise on a longish drive is becoming very tiring (for me). The reason I throw in the convertible is that I used to own a Miata, and I do miss the occasional top-down drive.

POST 2Original post

I went from an 86 coupe to a 997 coupe and the difference in engine noise is drastic. I had to make some modifications to the exhaust and intake just so I could actually hear the engine. I got Fister mufflers and capped the airbox resonator and now it has a nice sound on acceleration but it's still relatively quiet with the windows up and plenty comfortable on long drives. If you're looking for it to be as quiet as possible you could just stick with the stock 997 exhaust which IMO can barely be heard.

POST 4Original post

Hi bbinder, While I don't have a direct comparison between a 997 to a G50 coupe, I can share with you my experience with the following vehicles: - 2004 Porsche 996 C2 (my current daily driver) - 1993 Toyota MR2 Turbo (t-top) - 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged (t-top) - 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider (convertible) I would say my 996 is the quietest of them all, and I've got the what I think is called the valvetronic factory system (quiet/loud setting.) I can confidently say it is great for long drives. I'm sure the 997 will fare just as well, if not, better. Despite both my Toyota MR2s having been modified, they were loud, so not a fair comparison, but my experience with the stock form of the two generation of MR2s were quiet, yet I feel that 996 comes out top for long drives and road noise.
