As I only use the car at weekends, I feel that a little more volume would be desirable (ex TVR owner!) and was toying with the idea of a cup exhaust.

I used the car every day, so that probably compounded the problem, but you should be fine if it's just a weekend toy.

If you use your car everyday, keep your iPod with you at all times because the radio cannot compete with the exhaust.

Suggestion

Sound is very loud but incredible - it really really screams and sounds very different to a GT3 using the standard headers and by-pass pipes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I currently have a 996 Cab with Agency Power exhaust and Design 911 induction, which sounds fantastic in tunnels but extremely civilised driving normally. As I only use the car at weekends, I feel that a little more volume would be desirable (ex TVR owner!) and was toying with the idea of a cup exhaust. Anyone used one and if so, is it unbearable or perfectly good for weekend blats?

POST 2Original post

Are you talking about a muffler bypass? if so, I am fitting one in a couple of days, so I'll tell you how it is when it's complete.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Paul, I guess one and the same - the tube straight to tip without all of the muffler gubbins  Will be very interested to hear your views....

POST 4Original post

Hi Chauch, I had muffler bypass pipes fitted to my last 996 and they will not disappoint on the volume front, they are very very loud, will drown out a TVR no problemo. The only thing that I found is that after a while, once the novelty of the sheer noise has worn off, you notice that the sound is not very cultured and in fact begins to sound like a car whose exhausts have just fallen off, if that makes sense! I used the car every day, so that probably compounded the problem, but you should be fine if it's just a weekend toy. I have had stainless manifolds fitted to my current 996 in the search for the optimum sound, coupled with Marc Sonnenfeld back boxes, which together make a very pleasant sound indeed. I'm very tempted to get the muffler bypass pipes back on though, so if I do, I'll get a sound bite and post it. It's kind of like having the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other shoulder. The angel is saying that the car has a perfectly good soundtrack as it is which fits well with the concept of the vehicle. The devil is saying that there are still one or two people in the city who still don't know I drive a Porsche, so I must attract their attention with an uber-loud exhaust!!!

POST 5Original post

pretty much what Clivejive said :thumb: IIRC doesnt a cab mean that it doesnt resonate as much in the car, but have the same outside effect ? can't recall certainly worth doing, there are some serious air-cooled and noisy systems out there, as the refined water cooled tech should keep things in check

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. There are a couple of sound clips kicking around on the net, some that seem to sound fantastic, some that back the the "uncultured" noise comment! I no dot have a problem with resonance at all from my current exhaust inside the car, even though it is actually quite loud and I do think that it being a cab helps Sundeep, particularly as it is rare that I drive with the roof up. It is almost a shame that no-one offers a product in between the normal sports exhaust offerings and the Cup, almost the Cup pipe with a very small silencer to improve the sound and make it slightly more civilised. That said, I think I will keep my eyes open for a Cup exhaust and give it a whirl

POST 7Original post

I have the Manthey headers and titanium exhaust on mine minus the boxes. after the balance tube the pipes exit out the rear bumper on very short straight pipes. Sound is very loud but incredible - it really really screams and sounds very different to a GT3 using the standard headers and by-pass pipes. If you use your car everyday, keep your iPod with you at all times because the radio cannot compete with the exhaust. I love it and will never put the boxes back on.
