Well I've confirmed that there is an oil leak, only problem is I'm not sure what the part is called. It's the part that bolts to the front of the engine and has the oil pressure piston. I believe it's called an oil feed regulator.
I was doing an oil change the other day and noticed a suspect leak, so I removed the rear under panel and sprayed the area with dish soap and water, then just water. Then went for about a 10 mile drive, and today got back under the car to see if it was in fact a leak....Trust me I didn't want to see what I did.
I would like to learn what exactly this part does and how it started leaking. I've looked at many post and have run across someone that has had this part fail and the dealer had to remove the engine
I have even rulled out the washer on the 17mm piston bolt, its definetly where the part bolts to the engine.
Although I am happy this will be covered under warranty, I must admit I'm not happy to see this at 11k miles on the odo. The part about the dealer removing the engine or even anything close to it makes me a bit nervo.
Anyone have any info or thoughts?
Thank you
Phillip
Too answer my own question, I've found this video...
YouTube - Porsche Boxster S engine rebuild 06
Looks like there is a rubber o-ring gasket used on the oil pump. So the only question is will the dealer have to R&R the engine to replace it?
I doubt they have to remove the whole engine to replace it, you can work on those areas of the engine with the car on a lift. Your car is under warranty right? Just take it in and get it fixed.
R&R oil pump
Thank you, I do plan to take the car in this week to have it fixed under warranty. I suppose if the front motor mount can be removed with the engine still in place it will be a pretty simple fix. There is a motor mount bolt that runs through the oil pump, and spacing is quite tight. I will keep the club informed of the outcome, just incase anyone else has this come up.
Re: R&R oil pump
The tech found an oil leak on the driver's side cam tower during my 20k service last year - they had to drop my motor to fix it, and they did a great job. Since then, the car has been driven from LV to Charlotte, and driven in 10 track days in the advanced/instructor group. It drives/runs just like it did before I took it in, and it doesn't leak oil anymore to boot... you really have nothing to worry about.

That whole series of videos are an excellent resource, by the way.
Speaking of resource I've just discovered that the front engine mount, water pump and oil pump are DIY...
DIY Front Engine Mount
Although I will be having the work performed via warranty, it is kinda nice to know there are alot of things one can do if needed.
There is a great article about what the after market folks are doing to improve our engines for the long haul in this Excellence.
For guys like me who plan on keeping their cars for a long time it is an interesting read.
