The fault codes showed three faulty coils but two were different to the first time we checked the coils.

Suggestion

It's probably worth resetting the codes and as soon as the problem comes back again, check the codes to see if it is just one coil and which one.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

after a few tips if poss . i got out of my car 996 c4 had a cup of tea etc then went out to car to have it run like a pig man light came on. have plugged it in got error codes to say misfire on cyln 4,5,6 . anyone got any where to start to look. mark

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

codes i dont have the codes and it wasnt porsche software but said misfire on 4,5,6. as for coil pack not sure 3 will go at once ...but thanks

POST 5Original post

If it is all on one bank, I think it is most likely to be a Variocam fault. That usually gives codes P0304, 0305, and 0306 for cylinders 4, 5, and 6.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

that was going to be my 1st port of call, do you have an idear of poss cost, is it a big job . mark

POST 7Original post

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

its worth a look and its free to check. mark

POST 9Original post

I had a similar problem on my previous 996 (C4) and had a major misfire, but was miles away from my indy so had to drive a far way before he could have a look at it and find the fault codes. By the time I got there it was showing faults on 4 of the coil packs. My indy (David Philips, Edinburgh) said that if the fault in one is not rectified soon enough, it can disrupt the signal to the others showing faults on more than one. He reset the fault code and the car ran like normal again for the next few days, before developing another misfire. We did this to see if we could narrow down the offending coil. The fault codes showed three faulty coils but two were different to the first time we checked the coils. The one coil that showed up in both checks was definitely on the way out when removed, the casing was very deteriorated. It's probably worth resetting the codes and as soon as the problem comes back again, check the codes to see if it is just one coil and which one. I ended up changing all the coils (for the sake of 150 quid) cause if one was on the way out, the others wouldn't be far behind.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

cleared codes but no joy just keep coming back as soon as you start car hum i love porsche. mark

POST 11Original post

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforu...heck-engine-light-misfires-cyl-3-and-6-a.html You may wish to read this article carefully/indepth before starting to mess around with the vario Simply swap a coil pack from the opposite bank into the weather proof plug on 4,5 & 6. One by one you can check if the fault clears on each cycl (4,5,6). If the known good coil pack clears each fault individually as you go along each cycl, then you have your answer.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok thanks will give it a go. mark

POST 13Original post

I only read the first few posts, but that is a totally different scenario. The faults mentioned are misfires on two cylinders on opposite banks, an he mentions no rough running.

POST 14Original post

Might it not be worth the investment to take the car to a good Indy or an OPC and get them to give you a fuller diagnosis and possible explanation :?: Big Bob :bye:

POST 15Original post

Coil packs don't care which cyl they affect and the OP does not have the error codes so spending 10 mins swapping a coil pack from a known good firing cyl to the other bank is def worth doing as it quickly rules in/out coil pack failure.
