Suggestion

Yeah, I guess one just has to factor in the condition of your mufflers, if they look vaguely ropey your prob better doing the refurbished Oettle route, if not then use your own

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have recently fitted muffler bypasses on my 996, took me four hours to fit (it was my first time!). They produce a very satisfying roar when you gun it, and I can definately feel thet there is more power there, although there is a bit of lag in the low rev range. You also get a few pops and burbles which is very nice. My ears are slowly melting away every time I get in the car, and the mufflers are just sitting in the garage doing nothing. So... is there any modifications that anybody can recommend for me to do to the mufflers? A DIY Oettle mod perhaps (although I have no idea how to do this) or mabye I could gut the mufflers (no idea how to do this either). OR, is there any way to stop the damn resonance at 2-3k revs? Any responses would be greatly appreciated!

POST 2Original post

Once your mufflers are off the bypass is a simple weling operation which links a 1/2" or 3/4" pipe around you muffler You will need a garage who is happy to weld them in for you 150 pound would be fair This is all Ottle do for 3 times the price You could even put some manual valves in for fine tuning Lots of photos on google as to what to do

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also, when I'm stopped, the pipes make a rattling noise. Do they need to be supported by anything? Cheers

POST 4Original post

NOT TRUE - Oettle also gives you refurbished mufflers that have been quality checked for rust etc AND a 2 years warranty, if not longer, for the price. Your old ones may be rusty and knackered..

POST 5Original post

Perhaps I am being unfair to Oettle I was just pointing out that the bypass is much the same. Agreed their work may be more thourough and their welding of the highest coded class. But I am sure the desired effect can be achieved DIY. There is another company in Germany who will post back your boxes with the mod done. Search 996 exhausts. 270 pound plus post 100% positive feedback. One thousand opplogies to Oettle.

POST 6Original post

DIY Oettle - there are quite a few threads on here on how to do that, do a search and you should find the info you need. I think I was quoted c.£150 by Tower Porsche (London) to do the mod to my existing mufflers.

POST 7Original post

Yeah, I guess one just has to factor in the condition of your mufflers, if they look vaguely ropey your prob better doing the refurbished Oettle route, if not then use your own Kind Regards Edward

POST 8Original post

There is also an Ebay seller with racks full of 996 boxes at 140 a side.
