In a previous 911, I fitted an AVIC satnav system - which was absolutely fabulous on all counts.

They recommend the new Alpine iLX-702 which is the update to the iLX-700.

Suggestion
It actually modifies the innards of the CDR-31 by replacing the expansion cards inside the unit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was planning to do that to mine, but since I have front and rear parking assist, I would loose that, so I am now thinking about just speaker and amp upgrade. I wanted to have
iPod
connectivity and Bluetooth audio streaming, but does not look possible with the standard CDR-31.
If you plan to upgrade, check out the Clarion NX702, which is what I was going to have install; it had great reviews. Available at
Crutchfield
.com Good luck and post your thoughts after the upgrade.
I just ordered the Clarion NX702 to go in my
2011 987.2
with
CDR-30
/
Bose
. I also ordered the conversion kit form Euro Motorspeed. I know it isn't a
981
, but I will post info on my install and the Clarion NX702 within a couple of weeks.
I am also curious if anyone is doing this? For now I am going to buy the HTC Car StereoClip Wireless Bluetooth Music Adapter for music and use my
iPhone
to broadcast pandora and for the few times I need Nav?
I wonder if installing the aftermarket in dash units could alter
Porsche
warranties. That would be my biggest concern
I bought my
981
with basic CDR-31 (no bluetooth). So, first issue to connect an
iphone
5 so that you can hear music in reasonable quality through the aux channel - this is solved relatively painlessly by connecting the
iphone
to the aux socket - not through the headphone outlet on the
iphone
, but using a £1.74 adaptor from
Amazon
that links aux to the dock see
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neewer-Whit...White-3-5mm-Audio-iPhone/dp/B005DISKZQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1357231693&sr=8-1
Of course for an iphone 5 you still need the adaptor to convert the 30 pin end down to the new iphone 5 lightning connector (apple stiff you £25 for that).
However, getting the phone to work through the CDR-31 is another matter. Has anyone come up with a neat solution to retrofit bluetooth to the cdr-31 - or alternatively is there an alternative solution?
I have previously used a JABRA system in a Cayman - which was OK (fabulous quality sound and duplex microphone), but I dont like the extra spaghetti and paraphernalia required to charge the device etc...
In a previous 911, I fitted an AVIC satnav system - which was absolutely fabulous on all counts. I dont particularly want to ditch the cdr-31 in the 981 as it sounds pretty good, links to the parking distance thingies and is pretty much there already - apart of course from the fundamentals...(why do Porsche do this? It is a huge negative on what is otherwise a great product).
Came across this on eBay and found it in a couple of other spots..
Seems too good to be true...anyone know of this product?

RedTango: I checked this out. The device is manufactured in Korea by a company called AUXXO. They say that the CDR-31 and
PCM3.1
kits are the same and that the only difference is the presence of NAV with the
PCM
.
Having grappled with
Porsche
systems in the past - I know this is not as "simple" as the picture they paint...
Here is the link:-

I have consulted my local "in car hifi" dealer and their perceived wisdom is that installation is difficult - with the added concern of an uncovered PCB floating around at the back of the head unit...
Why is it never straight forward with Porsche audio/nav systems...
Agree..I've checked out the in town audio specialist..they don't want to touch any upgrades. One of them said they have used Nav Tools. But they are a few productions years behind supporting a Porsche interface
Soooooo...I'm resigned to my base sound system and garmin.
Just seen a link to Hualingan on todays posts - they make a range of head units for
Porsche
. I have emailed them to request that they make a replacement for the CDR-31 - to fit the
981
!
I wait in excitement for encouraging news...:burnout:
how bout just upgrading from
Porsche
service? dont they provide this type of service? like upgrading ur base system to Navi or even with
Bose
surround sound?
from 4 speakers to 7 speakers?
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but for anyone is wondering if this is possible I just finished a
981 Cayman
this week with an Alpine unit. We used
Suncoast
's bracket (TOP QUALITY by the way, great piece) for the radio trim and juiced the speakers with a JL amplifier.
I would not recommend taking this on as a DIY as the
BOSE
fiber-optic loop makes it difficult to grab the appropriate speaker signals, but it is 100% doable for an experienced shop.
Here are a couple pics of the finished product:
Thank you! That particular model is the INE-W940, but any of the double-din
Alpines
will fit
We did not hook up the steering stalk controls on this car (owner didn't care), however the manufacturer of the steering wheel control interfaces is currently working on the 9X1 platform.
Hi Folks
Have been running my
981
with
iPhone
5 plumbed in to the aux port via a belkin bluetooth system. Works great and cost me around GBP£80.
However, I've always wondered if you could plumb an
iPad
directly into the CDR-31. Well, looks like somebody has done just that with an
iPad
mini (retina).
see

It looks absolutely fantastic imo. This is exactly what we need!
What do you think?
What can you tell me about how to isolate the
Bose amp
. My shop here in CT does not think it can be done unless the remove the entire
Bose system
and start from scratch! Help!

Barry, this is what us 987 w/Bose guys are using, the MOST HUR kit from Euro Motorsports,
look them up on ebay here
I would get a hold of them and see what they can do for your 981 ?
Hi Guys.
I found this recently: It's a kit that modifies your CDR-31 (with or without
Bose
) to have a higher res screen, SatNav and 3 HDMI inputs
Navigation for Porsche CDR 3.1. GPS box, Video Interface and LCD
It actually modifies the innards of the CDR-31 by replacing the expansion cards inside the unit.
Has anyone heard of this or tried it before?
This company will do the mods for you if your send them your cdr31:
https://navtv.com/products/NTV-MOD027/cdr31-radio-modification.html
not sure if it is worth it, but you keep the fully stock appearance but get a modern system....
I guess no one has updated their CDR31? I keep running into Dead Ends researching this. Just purchased a 2013
981
and I want to upgrade the radio to have Navigation and/or replace the head unit with a 2-Din
Carplay
. Doesn't seem like it's a common solution?
I did some research a few weeks ago at my local ICE place in Wigan UK. They are called K & M Acoustics and I've used them quite a few times over the years.
They recommend the new Alpine iLX-702 which is the update to the iLX-700. It certainly has been improved. Have a look on the Alpine website.
The only sticking point is the facia and surround needed but I know they are available with '
Porsche
' printed at the bottom.
