I would recommend the higher wattage amp - I went with Morel 3 ways and a JL Audio D class amp putting out 150 watts per channel.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello, Can the factory speaker wires handle 100W RMS from an amp like an Alpine PDX-4? Did those of you who went with an aftermarket amp re-wire the speakers? I am upgrading the head unit and speakers on a 987.1 with a base sound system. Currently plan on installing a KTP-445A amp which is plug and play, and would allegedly put out 45W RMS. This would power a 6.5 set of Morel Maximo speakers. Not sure if this is enough power, or if it would be worth the cost to get a "real" amp installed. It's not so much the $200 price difference between the amps, but the cost of labor. My goal is to be able to drown out the engine and road noise on long highway trips. There will be no door treatment or soundproofing since I don't want to add much weight. Thanks!

Yep - factory wires will work fine. I would recommend the higher wattage amp - I went with Morel 3 ways and a JL Audio D class amp putting out 150 watts per channel. Those Morels can get loud!

The general rule of thumb is that speaker wire resistance should be less the 5% of the impedance of the speaker. That means for a typical 4 Ohm speaker, you'll want the resistance of the wiring to be less than 0.2 ohms. While redoing the speakers in my car (which was Bose equipped), I measured the impedance of the various wires. The lowest was .02 Ohms, the highest was .05 Ohms. The existing wiring will be DIN, not AWG sizes. I found a wiring diagram online for a Porsche Bose (option M680), that shows wires of 1.0 (dash/rear) and 1.5 gauge (doors). 1.0 is between 16 and 18 in terms of size, and 1.5 falls between 14 and 16.

Thank you for the responses. Keeping the stock wiring makes the prospect of getting an amp much more enticing. Now just need to decide if the improvement in sound will be worth the incremental cost. Would not do any sound proofing so not sure how good it could ever really sound. Leaning towards yes.
