Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
Give all the other rubbers a refresh/renew and replace the bump stop.
Leading evidence: 'Replace bump stop' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace bump stop' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The problem is you need to remove the strut and spring to fit them although they will be fine for a while but will need replacing eventually.

After it's done you will probably need to reset the suspension Geo.

Suggestion
There was no need to remove the strut or to alter the alignment bolts or to use a spring compressor.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi I've been painting my brake callipers and I noticed this on the front right suspension.
Is it something serious that needs fixing and if so what's required?
You just need the bump stops, the gaiter just pushes over the top of the bump stop and should go again.
The problem is you need to remove the strut and spring to fit them although they will be fine for a while but will need replacing eventually.
You may also need a set of spring compressors but in general it's not too bad of a job. There may be some stuck bolts if the struts have never been off before and you may also struggle to get the top centre nut undone as the strut spins and it's hard to lock it to stop is spinning.
After it's done you will probably need to reset the suspension Geo.
I did my front ones recently on the 996TT. First side took two hours and the second one hour. There was no need to remove the strut or to alter the alignment bolts or to use a spring compressor. There is a nice thread on this.
Jack up the car, remove the wheel and place another small jack under the edge of the lower strut mount or other suitable spot. Undo the one centre nut on the top of the shock and push the shock shaft down with a steel rod until it can be moved down into the inner guard. I put a thick rubber 'stopper' over the threaded end to make it easier to move in the guard space and not damage the plastic cover.
Undo the drop link and with some lowering of the small jack you should be able to take all the tension out of the spring and wriggle it out. Give all the other rubbers a refresh/renew and replace the bump stop. Reverse.
Can be done without spring compressors as per Mervo's post. However, if you're not really used to working on cars and don't have a healthy tool kit capable of dealing with awkward access and large fasteners torqued up tight then I would just put it in somewhere as it's a simple bread and butter job for any garage (no specialist required).
It won't affect how the car drives but I think bump stops in that state will get brought up in the MOT.
