I have been using a Garmin 2730 since it was introdused to market on my 06 CS as well as on my 06 BMW K1200GT, during bright days the display washes out on the bike, but no problems in the CS.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Outcome without a verified action link
(It happened two weeks ago and continued for several days.) I read that some car windshields made it difficult for the GPS to locate satellites so I bought a Garmin external antenna and the problem was solved.
I was thinking of getting an aftermarket Navigation Unit ,one of the units that just mounts to the window . can anyone Reccomend one and where is the best place to mount it ? I think the lower part of the window would be best. But open for sugestions. Thanks
I have been using Garmin for years. (Since before they did route planning.) I have Garman GPSs on my motorcycles, my cars, my sail boat and my bicycle.

I would personally suggest a Garmin Nuvi 660. I use the Garmin "bean bag" mount and put it on the dash. (It hasn't fallen off yet . . . even with spirited driving.)
The Nuvi 660 (and some of the other models) comes with Bluetooth and an FM TMC traffic receiver. I use the Bluetooth for hands free telephone use. The FM TMC traffic receiver warns you of road construction and other slow downs.
There are some other very good GPS manufactures out there. (TomTom for example.) It comes down to personal preference.

As gf said Garmin are very Good units. I just ordered a Nuvi 250W, less than $300. It does not have all the bells and whistles but will get you from A to B.
Check out Garmin's website, they have many to choose from.

The biggest advantage is that it is easy to remove but it does not slide around unless you are doing

I loaded the European software besides the North American software onto the unit and have used on several European trips since without any issues. I am thinking of upgrading to one of the newer systems in the spring and may go with the Zumo 550, very bright display for bike use. Check prices at COSTCO, they seemed tobe the lowest,

I've got the Garmin 2730 on my BMW R1200GS. In many ways it is better than the Garmin Nuvi. In other ways it isn't. I like the Nuvi's size. I like Bluetooth and FM TMC Traffic notification on the Nuvi. I don't like the fact that I can't add routes or change maps with the Nuvi. And Nuvi does not send you a map disk.
I have an Alpine Blackbird. Its been really a great unit, I have been using it for the better part of a year now without a glitch. Alpine just came out with an updated model as well, consider either one.
What is really interesting are all the new innovations on the drawing boards or being introduced now. New ways to present directions from windshield drawn arrows, 3-d, actual photos, and more. The built-in units are getting very left behind. As much as l love new toys I think I am going to miss the old "
wonder where this road goes, lets go find out
" days.
This one looks promising to me:

I mount the garmin nuvi 660 in the lower left hand corner of the windshield (drivers side) it doesnt block anything, and is easy to see and reach. I find it works out better routing then the indash oem bmw navi I have in the 335xi

ONLY
"problem" that I have ever had with my Garmin nuvi was an inability to locate satellites. (It happened two weeks ago and continued for several days.) I read that some car windshields made it difficult for the GPS to locate satellites so I bought a Garmin external antenna and the problem was solved. I put the antenna on the dash behind the GPS. (You can put this antenna on the roof if you choose. It's magnetic.) With the external antenna my GPS usually locates the satellites before I am completely out of my garage.
I agree with Santa Fe. Innovations in the GPS field are coming so fast that built-in units get "dated". I would not turn down a built-in unit. They eliminate dash clutter. But I am happy with my portable unit.
My wife's Mercedes has a built-in unit. I can't figure it out.
Whenever I drive her car I take my Garmin.
I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 760- the latest/greatest and was pretty disappointed- in fact, I returned it. It was very slow to pickup satellites, slow to re-route and to make matters worse, I got a defective unit! The speaker only worked 50% of the time. I'll tell you what I liked about it: the size, no flip antenna (though that's probably why it struggled to find the satellites), better Bluetooth compatibility than previous models (it found my blackberry 8830, synced the address book), Mac compatibility (native software updater).
I updated the firmware on the device before using it, so I was running the latest software. I was pretty surprised that the unit wasn't covered in the box, just sitting there in the cardboard- for $700, I expected a little more. Anyway, buyer beware. I'm sure it's just because it's very, very new- but for now, I'd stick with the $300 nuvi 650 that can be found online (costco.com). I have previously owned a Nuvi 360 and was very pleased.
On top of the panel on our $20 million aircraft sits our Garmin 496 with a bean bag mount! Although we have five other GPS's the 496 gives us access to XM weather and live weather radar which is really nice.
Although we don't use it for navigation, it's there if we loose everything on a dark night over the North Atlantic!
Pardon the poor photo quality.
I took a different strategy: I purchased a Magellan 4250 at Costco for $350, it will be at $250 with a coupon come March 17, (Fathers Gift). The unit does a very good job. Maybe the Garmin is better, but I will buy a new one in two years with the money left over. This unit will still be usefull and I will give it to my wife, or one o the kids.
Just a different point of view. Garmin is also an excellent unit, and the company has better support than Magellan.
Good luck!
