Obviously try to check the clutch and gear cable alignment first to make sure everything is working perfect, or like you say you may have a brake fluid leak which will require attention?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Latest issue people : ( I'm having issues engaging first gear in my car it also pops out at times I have to hold my hand on the gear stick when pulling away incase it pops out. It's like it need to go a few more mm to engage 1st gear! Sometimes when I try to engage first there is a horrible crunch like i haven't put my clutch pedal all the way to the floor. I have noticed fluid behind my driver side front wheel so I am saying that's my clutch slave cylinder Has anyone done the gearbox mod 8mm bearing?? Also has anyone done the shift arrester mod ?? Any help much appreciated

POST 2Original post

Slave cylinder is on passenger side in front of rear wheel. Front drivers side sounds more like fluid reservoir or master cylinder.

POST 3Original post

I had a whine on my 2nd gears quite a few years ago and it was fine to live with but a few months later I got 1st gear pop out and it became dangerous when pulling out of junctions, all of a sudden having no drive and being left stranded across two lanes at random times, I decided to get it rebuilt. Obviously try to check the clutch and gear cable alignment first to make sure everything is working perfect, or like you say you may have a brake fluid leak which will require attention?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Infrasilver What kinda coin are we talking to get the gearbox rebuilt ?

POST 5Original post

Assuming your car is a turbo, then an overflowing front clutch reservoir is a sign of a poorly clutch slave cylinder. As for the gearbox, from reading this site for many years it's usually 2nd that gets pop out and it's caused by worn internals. Repair of these gearboxes is difficult and requires very carefull measurements and assembly otherwise the pop out will re-occur. I occasionally read the American forums and they seem to have success with the more powerful detent springs etc stopping the pop out in some cases. Other people say it's not a proper fix and just causes other parts to wear leading to a bigger bill. If I had a gearbox problem I would take it to Mike at Sports and Classic because I know how difficult they are to rebuild, and Mike has the skill! Mac

POST 6Original post

That all depends what else needs attention and where you take it, if you can get the modified detent to work it is one way around it but as said it just masks the problem. Sports and Classic or Fearnsport are the obvious places to take it.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I haven't been at the slave cylinder yet but can you guys have a look at this too see what you think? https://youtu.be/HZvpiTZtOBM

POST 8Original post

Hmmm, does look a little loose and misting oil from the pivot point. The cables are loose in their mount but as long as they don't come out that shouldn't be causing the problem. EDIT, looks like a Carrera box rather than a Turbo, it always helps when diagnosing problems if you have your car model/year in your signature. :thumb:

POST 9Original post

I don't have any personal experience of these gearboxes but the play on that clutch actuating shaft looks excessive. This may be reducing the effective stroke (push) of the slave cylinder and not fully releasing the clutch. It's a shame the "hands" didn't pop the boot off the slave cylinder to look for fluid inside. This would indicate leaking seals in the slave cylinder although there is no external staining/leaking to support that (yet).

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've just had a good look around the slave cylinder and there is no sign of any leaking :dont know: I've added a few pics someone has been at it before by looks of things check out the cable ties ?? I've looked around the master cylinder and I cant see any obvious leaks either however there is some fluid around the reservoir also some on the front corner of the side skirt : see pics

POST 12Original post

Right so it's definitely a turbo we,re looking at! The turbo has an assisted clutch which is powered from the power steering pump, when the clutch slave cylinder goes bad what happens is fluid from the power steering reservoir leaks internally across the seals. This makes the clutch reservoir in the front over flow (this is located under the cover and to the left of the battery) It does not leak from the slave cylinder itself. Check your power steering fluid as it's likely to be low if you do indeed have a faulty slave. Mac

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah mate 2002 turbo Nice one I'll have a look tommorow Is there any other way to determine exactly what the problem is apart from what you stated ? Whilst I'm under the car? Cheers for the advice

POST 14Original post

By the time you have a crunch, the detent spring solution will not work. Can't help you with the leak issue. The gearbox rebuild if it is just 1st/2nd synchro issue will set you back around £5k - £6k inc VAT if the specialist has your car and has to take the box out and refit + any other bits worn beyond tolerance (high mileage cars especially may need other bits). You may fit a new clutch while in there (depending on mileage and when last changed). It aint cheap and Porsche have raised the price for parts. Mike at Sports & Classic would be my recommendation. He does loads of these gearbox rebuilds on 996/997 Turbos and NA cars including GT3's. Worth a phone call to ask what he suggests and how to move forward to a resolution.
