Reported cause
One theory is that it is caused by poor alignment of the two shafts in tfe gearbox from the factory.
Leading evidence: 'poor alignment of the two shafts in tfe gearbox' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'poor alignment of the two shafts in tfe gearbox' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil and found this' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've checked the service history and receipts I have for the car and I cannot see anything regarding the gearbox no service on the box.

It was quiet mild for gearbox oil so I'm guessing it's not been changed for a while.

On the other hand, the pop out is caused by chipped or worn dog teeth on the synchro and could be the result of sggressively slamming into 2nd gear.

I thought it was the slave cylinder - master cylinder looked at most things.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I fear that as you already have pop out and crunching, it means a strip and rebuild is the solution because no change of oil or cables can address the cause of wear and tear in the internal components.
Manual 92k on it
I've been trying to diagnose the 1st gear issue on it
I thought it was the slave cylinder - master cylinder looked at most things.
I decided to drain the gearbox oil today to check the oil and found this
I don't want to state the obvious but you didn't drop the Plug in the container that the oil dropped in to ?
Can't tell from that pic if it's been taken on a garage floor or the bottom of a container ??
I take it you have filled it back up ? Have you driven it and if so how's first gear now since the new oil has been added ?
First in mine is a bit notchy till it's warmed up then it's precise,
If that's over a period of years there's nothing wrong with it. You'll get a build up over time. I once pulled mine on a CLK. Looked like metal mickey with an afro.
Nah lol
It wasnt dropped in the container
I was expecting loads of metal swarf in the oil but I didnt see any??
However the oil didnt really have that potent gearbox smell to it
It was quiet mild for gearbox oil so I'm guessing it's not been changed for a while.
I've checked the service history and receipts I have for the car and I cannot see anything regarding the gearbox no service on the box.
I haven't put new oil yet
I have new cables etc for the box new shifter as someone has put a quick shifter kit into the car I believe it's a £2.99 chinese special from wish or somewhere??
I have also purchased a clutch SAVER kit as I believe there is an issue with the slave cylinder
It's a huge relief tho to see you fellas have the swarf on the plug
I was thinking to myself why would porsche install the.magnet to the plug if they didnt expect any shrapnel
Changing the oil is a cheap solution and I hope it sorts your issue. But you mentioned it was popping out of gear as if not fully home. It may be a clutch issue. On the other hand, the pop out is caused by chipped or worn dog teeth on the synchro and could be the result of sggressively slamming into 2nd gear.
Yeah mate I will definitely be trying fresh oil new cables
Before the 8 grand gearbox over haul
Just got it back from getting new turbos fitted
Gutted :frustrated:
8 grand gearbox overhaul ! :eh!:
Holy sheet...... that sounds horrendous !! See what it's like when the Meccano short shift kit is out and the New cables and fresh oil are In ?
I know mate I thought your f***ing having a laugh he did say worse case scenario
I thought wheres the matches at this bastards getting torched here I've had enough :frustrated:
That's when I walked out of the garage : (
I'm just watching gearbox flushing makes sense
Has anyone done that?
A gearbox rebuild requires specialist tools and experience.
It is sometimes the case that Mike at Sports & Classic gets a rebuild after someone else 'had a go' and I know of one instance where the box was so badly rebuilt that it had to be scrapped. There are numerous settings that must be adhered to and various adjustments.
You don't state mileage. But high mileage cars are very likely going to be needing new parts due to general wear and tear.
Also, the crown wheel and pinion needs to be checked on high mileage cars (which Mike does in any case).
One poster stated a rebuild orice of £3k inc VAT. For 2nd gear pop out, that seems very cheap. Porsche have been putting up the prices of gearbox parts for the past 5 years as steadily the demand for parts increases.
I think £8k is a potential cost. But I think it is more likely in the range £5k - £6k. Bear in mind that some specialists charge yiu labour to remove and refit the gesrbox and courier it to Mike to carry out the strip and rebuild and then charge you a markup for their 'service'
Pop out begins to happen very intermittently. So many owners ignore it and push it back into gear as there is no crunch. Left like that it ultimately starts to crunch. In one instance, a box would not go into 2nd gear and 1st started to crunch. 2nd gear could not be used at all by the time a rebuild was booked.
The cost of that repair was more than had the owner had it addressed very quickly.
If it is any consolation, it is quite common on 996/997 NA cars, Turbos and even GT3's are not immune. It happens irrespective of mileage. One theory is that it is caused by poor alignment of the two shafts in tfe gearbox from the factory. Aggressive slamming into 2nd at traffic light getaways chips the dog teeth and is another contributory cause.
I fear that as you already have pop out and crunching, it means a strip and rebuild is the solution because no change of oil or cables can address the cause of wear and tear in the internal components.
I don't think it would be too crazy on a turbo. Depending on what you want done whilst you are in there. I don't think the turbo gearbox needs the same high power press as the Carrera gearboxes. I recently sold a perfect condition 36k gearbox for £5k, which is about the right price in the UK. Yours could be sold as in need of a rebuild for somebody who is stripping one for a high power build, so you should be able to get out of it for £2k I would have thought.
