I found an interesting cab for sale at a used car lot (haven't seen it in person yet), but when I ran the VIN on Carfax I learned that the car had originated in Ontario Canada.

There are over 1000 used Porsches imported into Canada every year because our dollar is so strong now and dealer pricing here is absurd.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, This is my first post on your forum. I have owned two 944's in the past (a few years ago) and am now actively searching for the "right" 996. I found an interesting cab for sale at a used car lot (haven't seen it in person yet), but when I ran the VIN on Carfax I learned that the car had originated in Ontario Canada. The car has spent most of it's life in the states, so I know that it passes all vehicle inpsections (shown on carfax). Is there anything that I should worry about with a car from Canada? thanks!

POST 2Original post

A car in canada costs more than one in the States :P due to the dollar rates these days. Otherwise, the only diff is the speedo guage being in KM, not the led which you can switch to miles. And that it has DRL (daytime running lights). You probably want to get a PPI as well.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was going to post a link, but I need 4 more posts...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's the link to the car I was looking at: 99 Cab

POST 8Original post

If the car checks out and you buy it, you can always swap your instrument cluster for a US one. It's not really necessary since you can switch all the digital readouts to MPH/imperial; it's just the analogue speedo that you have to live with. There are over 1000 used Porsches imported into Canada every year because our dollar is so strong now and dealer pricing here is absurd. If you post in the Canada forum that you want to exchange your cluster for a US one, I bet you'll get dozens of responses. Other than that, all p-cars are German whether they live north or south of the 49th parallel. Good luck.

POST 9Original post

Also, make sure the title is indicated as "clear". When I moved from Ontario to Pennsylvania PennDot would not issue a clear title since the car was imported (it was only a few years old as well).

POST 10Original post

Sorry, little bit late to the game. There are typically three reasons why Canadian market cars end up in the USA: 1) The original owner moved to the USA and brought it into the country as a personal item. 2) The car couldn't be sold in Canada because of history. 3) The car was bought by a US resident from Canada because he got a good price or didn't want to wait Reasons #1 and #3 are typically no cause for concern. Issue #1 happened to me when I moved from Canada to the USA and brought my Audi A4 down with me. It was simply more convenient for me than to have to buy a brand new car. Reason #3 happens with a number cars when they're "hot" in the US market. For example, when the second generation RAV4 was introduced, the local Toyota dealership had 6 brand new Rav4 which they purchased from Canada to supplement their stock from Toyota. Remember that back in 2001, the US dollar was pretty strong and Canadian car prices were pretty appealing. Now, we're at reason #2. Provinces like British Columbia have laws which require the declaration of accidents for a vehicle. All accidents which are recorded by the insurance agency must be declared whether you sell it privately or you're a used car dealer. If you run up to BC and look at a used car you can just ask them "Does this car have any dec's?". They will tell you. I don't know about other provinces but it basically means that cars involved in accidents are devalued dramatically. These cars did end up getting dumped in either Alberta, Canada (which has no such requirement) or they end up in the States. CarFax does NOT track Canadian accident histories. So the title is basically washed as a result of the import. All CarFax knows are renewal events from Canada.

POST 11Original post

if it was from Ontario i think you could talk to the dealer about it there are only 3 dealers in the province. i am betting it is either Downtown or Pfaff. go to the Porsche site and do a seach under CDN dealers. they have phone numbers and the whole bit. if it was by some chance Ottawa let me know and i will ask them myself!
