Suggestion

Obivously you can only check the outside visually, the inners may be more worn, but if you are down to the last few mm anywhere then I'd plan to change them soon.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The brake pad warning light came on while I was driving my 996 cab the other day but has not come back on again after several restarts. I am not sure whether I should get the pads checked out or not. Advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

POST 2Original post

You should be able to get a decent idea just by looking at the pads - a torch helps. The light would normally come on with c. 3mm of pad left. Odd for it to go off though as its an earth loop: once you've got through to the wire that is normally it. Obivously you can only check the outside visually, the inners may be more worn, but if you are down to the last few mm anywhere then I'd plan to change them soon. Once they are that low the pad material wears very quickly.

POST 3Original post

Had it just rained or had you washed the car? You could have a small 'knick' in the sensor wires and the water completed the circuit bringing the warning light on. If it doesn't come back on after you start the car I wouldn't worry about it. Even after the light comes on properly you still have a few mm left in the pads. Just get them changed fairly soon, you can visually inspect remaining pad life anyway...
