Has anyone done a chip mod yet? Powerchip is claiming 306HP / 260 Lb-ft, or 312 HP / 265 Lb-ftbased on which flash they use. So, they are seeing 5.5 HP / 1 degree of advance in timing.

Paul You have probably read this topic:

I really feel strongly that the so called power chips are a waste of money. They all compromise an exisiting setting that usually have a negative impact somewhere else (more fuel used and so on). I'm also not yet personally convinced that my day to day driving requires a few more hp. Do you think the risks and expense are worth the extra power if where real?
I was more 'probing' to see if anyone has actually made a chip modification as opposed to advocating doing the mod.
That said, yes advancing the timing will enhance HP. In fact, it is one of only two ways to enhance HP (the other being A/F ratio). So, it is definitely not 'snake oil'. It is the same way tuners have been squeezing out horsepower for over 70 years. Yes, there are draw-backs. Nothing in this world is free, otherwise Porsche would have simply made this very simple adjustment themselves. The drawback is octane - you must (absolutely no wiggle room) have very high octane in your car 93-94 or it will detonate. I already put in 93 octane, so that wouldn't necessarily be an issue for me. Also, they may be remapping A/F slightly to make it run richer, so that would have a deleterious impact on gas mileage.
I'm not pushing the modas 'good' and should be done, but it is certainly legitimate (in theory) with few drawbacks if you don't mind paying for higher octane fuel and more of it than normal...

wanted to bump this old thread and find out if any members have used Powerchip?
they claim 17hp and 14lb torque increase with 93 gas without any other mods. real or marketing
In actuality, the A/F ratios are typically leaner in performance software upgrades. Particularly in N/A vehicles. The factory programming is rich as Porsche must account for different fuel qualities and varying degrees of owner care. By leaning out the A/F and modifying the timing, tuners are able to get the power they do. Even in a worst case scenario, someone using 87 Octane fuel, factory safeguards will still prohibit timing advance and richen the A/F to inhibit detonation. With that said, many cars with ECU upgrades will typically show an increase in mileage under
normal
driving conditions.
Not real sure about N/A engines but I can tell you in non N/A engines (Turbos) the gain from an ECU remap (GIAC, REVO, etc.) is significant. Some can give you as much as 100HP/90-100 ft lbs tq for a little over $2K...and it reduces spooling time. Whats not to like?
Non N/A engines --- I'd do it all day long (and will if I could ever sell my CS
and pick up the 996tt)
N/A engines ---- I'd like to hear from someone that has done it.
George, any comments on this article?
