Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, I get a slight vibration through the steering wheel from 70 on my 996 Turbo. I had the balancing checked this week and all were fine and ran true. I have new front disc's and have no vibration under braking. It's only slight but can be felt at the front of the car. My passenger even commented on it yesterday whilst taking the ride down to the Wilton House event. Any idea's? Cheers Jim

POST 2Original post

Check the run out of the hub and the discs. Slightly worn wheel bearings or suspension components can also cause a vibration. Just to be sure, have the wheels rebalanced. A lot of places balance wheels to the nearest 5 grams but go to a place that will balance to the nearest gram.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers mate. My front nearside was only within 5 grams. I will go somewhere else to have it re done. Jim

POST 4Original post

Most places opt for the balance to the nearest 5 grams i.e if machine reads 0 as in balanced, it can still be slightly out. This is fine in most cars. Problem is shops then put tyres on, spin them, attach the weights and don't bother to respin the tyres to make sure it is balanced. Or if they do and the machine reads 5 grams they are happy to consider that within range forgetting that could mean your tyre is now anything between 3 to 7.5 grams out. On most cars you will get away with that except the 911 and the 106 GTI, both cars I have and the same thing has occured before. It has been less evident on my other cars. Probably something to do with how direct the steering is in these 2 cars. I'm actually in the process of buying my own hand spin machine as the same problem annoys me no end. Tyre fitters forget that 5 grams out is about 1kg of weight at 70 mph. Good luck, hopefully that is all it is.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers mate. The guy said my front nearside was 5g out but that it was acceptable. I will take it elsewhere and get it balanced to the nearest g. hopefully that will sort it. Cheers Jim
