Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have this annoying noise coming from the top vertical rear edge of the driver window. Driving on a smooth road its not there but over any bumps or dips I hear a tick or squeak from the glass/rubber seal. Its not that loud but its right next to my ear so I easily hear it above the engine/road noise. I seems like the window seal is "popping" when the body flexes over a bump...it makes me feel the car is not as solid as I would expect. I have about 5,000 mi. and this has been around for a few months. Driving me NUTS! Of course the dealer doesn't hear it... Anybody else heard of this?

POST 2Original post

Are you sure it's the window in the driver's door? Does the sound go away if you press against the glass or lower the window slightly? If not, maybe it's the rear quarter window, which slides into the B-pillar and is held in place with two bolts. This window can make noises if it's not properly tightened. I had a noise which I thought was the quarter window and it turned out to be the airbox (as I described on a recent thread). These are all things you could check out.

POST 3Original post

I can press outward on the B-pilar and it seems to go away (hard to be sure while I driving). The qtr window seem solid though. I'll do some tests... Thanks

POST 4Original post

I think I had the same noise you were describing, But after doing the reccommendations from Caymancouver I found it to be the pilar and not the window. I went behind the seatbelt cover and tightened the bolt about 1/4 turn and have not heard the noise for over two months. I love this forum and all the help everyone is willing to give !!!

POST 5Original post

I have a similar noise, but only when the window is down. There have been a few others with similar problems and it tends to be the B pillar or side read window from what I can see here. I'm going to let the dealership deal with it.

POST 6Original post

Yes, I have chased that noise for 6 months. Finally, I did a couple of things: First, I went into the airbox (thanks to caymancouver) and found that if has the ability to move enough to hit up against the body of the car. I added some sound padding to the outside of the airfilter and tightened it all back down. Second, take off the seat belt cover and tighten down the B-billar bolt. I also added some sound padding behind the plastic trim pieces up against the quarter window. No more noise!

POST 7Original post

Ok, after reading all I could find on rattles and noises, I took apart the cover over the seatbelt...low and behold, the 14mm nut that holds the qtr window was VERY loose. I gave it a couple of turns...I was afraid to really crank it for fear of breaking the glass. So its now snug but not a tight as might do for another bolt. Drove it to work today and the noise is gone!! Yea! Thanks for all of the suggestions. Great resource. Cheers, Bruce

POST 8Original post

Veloyellow this happened to my Cayman as well and many other Cayman 's on the forum; good job on finding the loose driver-side B-piller nut; I took it into my service center and they found and tightened it for me.

POST 9Original post

My Cayman has a similar groan- I booked it into the dealer for "tightening the B-pillar bolt" I was told not to believe everything I read on the internet and that the bolt was properly torqued The groan has now become a rattle after fiddling with the passenger window a bit. Guess the bolt needs tightening after all.

POST 11Original post

I had taken this in to the dealer last month...and of course they couldn't find anything wrong. I will say that the dealer rep called me right back when I gave a "they didn't fix my problem" response to the standard followup phone call they do. My response was "I'll wait until it get worse...". After several days, still fine so that pretty much is a wrap for this one. Thanks again to the people on the site!

POST 12Original post

I've got a really annoying buzzing / rattle coming from the passanger B-pillar area. I want to check the b-pillar bolts. Whats the best way to remove the seatbelt cover without breaking anything?

POST 13Original post

go to the articles section and find the article relating to adding the harness bar. it shows how to remove the plastic cap piece..you literally just pull up on it.

POST 14Original post

Ummm - I just tried this, broke the plastic that holds the clip, and now can't get the rubber seal trim back in properly. D'oh!!! I should have left it to the dealer! Anyhow, the bolt seemed tight, but I think I've found the problem - its my rear speaker covers, they are loose. I can hear them vibrate if I knock on the trim right next too them. I get the dealer to sort it - hopefully they will fix the seatbelt cover for free.....

POST 15Original post

Hi, Caymancouver, I am having the same problem. when I lower the driver's window half way or more, it will have this sound. But I close the window completely, the sound will be gone. I am n00b, what is "B-pillar" ? is there a picture for it? thanks
