Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

A number of my customers have been advised to have the hydraulic unit changed elsewhere when we found only the solenoid that makes it work was at fault - but you still need to remove several parts to fix it.

Leading evidence: 'Replace elsewhere' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace elsewhere' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996 C2 needs a new chain tensioner according to my OPC. These cost apparently £550 each. Anyone ideas where you can buy them for a lower price? Is this a common problem? Any info appreciated Thanks Marlof

POST 2Original post

**EDIT** > oops! I didn't read 'chain' and assumed aux-belt Try Euro car parts I would think someone like Gates or Continental would be the OEM supplier for the these. Look to order it as a belt kit, it will have the tensioner, pullies, belt & any other relevant bolts etc

POST 3Original post

I assume you mean camshaft chain tensioners. The tensioner guide rails and adjusters arent hugely expensive - it's the tensioner cylinders which are £550 each. There is quite a lot of labour involved too - about 6 hours. And an OPC will probably want to take the engine out to do it.

POST 4Original post

The only chains on the 996 are inside the engine and the belt and belt tensioner are outside. There are 5 chains, one from the intermediate shaft to the crankshaft (roller or later ones hivo), two from the intermediate shaft to the exhaust camshafts (one for each bank) and another short one connecting the two camshafts together one each side. There are 5 tensioners - three are simple spring loaded and oil pressure fed while the two on the camshafts connecting them fit round the variocam solenoid and hydraulic unit. If the variocam stops working on one side it is usually the solenoid that needs changing, but the whole hydraulic unit can also fail. A number of my customers have been advised to have the hydraulic unit changed elsewhere when we found only the solenoid that makes it work was at fault - but you still need to remove several parts to fix it. If you are not sure I suggest you ask advice from another independent specialist familiar with the problem. Baz

Bearings have numbers on them, if you can get these numbers off the unit I can try some companies I have accounts with who just do automotive bearings.
