Hi guys. I was wondering if someone could help me out here.
So I had an oil change at a dealership, they changed my oil. On the drive back I got the warning sign that the oil was too full, so I inquired about it. They said it might be slightly over but will drop. Drove about a week and decided to check myself at a local garage. I dumped oil and checked the electronic guage, they overfilled it with over 2 quarts of it!
I thought this was the end of my problems, but recently I got a CEL, OBDII says its a P2179. There's very little information about this error pertaining to the
boxster/cayman
.
I checked for a vacuum leak using a smoke machine and didn't find anything at all. I took out the MAF sensor (well, removed it so I could spin it because there wasn't enough clearance to actually take it out) and cleaned it using MAF cleaner to try to fix the problem but the CEL keeps coming back.
What's even worse is that last night on a test drive the car went to emergency transmission mode. There was a post here on the forums saying basically it could be a MAF issue.
Am I correct in my diagnosis that the MAF is dying and could be result from the overfilled oil? I've also been getting smoke out the exhaust on cold startups but my oil level keeps staying the same.
Any help would be appreciated, especially on how to get the MAF sensor out on the
987.2
Thanks.
It's hard for me to correlate an MAF failure with an oil overfill. Air/oil separator failure, CAT failure maybe but MAF, I don't know? Anyway 2 quarts over fill is an egregious error. It is unfortunate that you took it upon yourself to correct it. I would have definitely taken it back to the dealer and complained. As it is now you only have your word for it that it was 2 qt over. Any subsequent failures caused by that over fill can now be easily denied as to their cause. Anyway good luck and still do complain to the dealer.
Mine reads overfill after every oil change. Just did two hard days at the track with that message. Really doubt that it damaged your car in any way.

I have had MAF related issues trigger transmission errors in my
PDK
before.
try cleaning it first. Its tricky to get to but I got the indy near me to do it.
Any updates to this code error?
Just did an OBD scan the other day and I get
"P2179 CODE DEFINITION: • System Too Lean Off Idle Bank 2"
Was this scan with a Porsche specific OBD-II tool? Reason I ask - any code over P0999 is manufacturer specific. You'll see guides on the web for higher numbers - but unless they are specifically for your car - chances are a lot of them will be referring to entirely different faults.
Here is what the PIWIS has to say about P2179:
Here is the diagnostics info:
Looks to me like your MAF is toast. the fault codes are generally given in order of probability (first one is most likely, next one less so, etc..)
BTW - you might be asking - what's AllData?
It was originally a CD based manual system for mechanics who subscribed to it - they subscribed by brand or car model.. it now has a DIY offering - where for about $20/year you can subscribe to a vehicle year/model. And there are frequent discounts for a new signup - do a search for coupons for AllDataDIY... Their website is alldatadiy.com.
They use the factory information and sort it out so it can be presented in a useable/searchable manner. For instance - the factory manual for my '11 Cayenne turbo is 11,000 pages - Porsche designed the manual to be on the PIWIS - and instead of using link references - if the same procedure is used on 10 different variants (engine, model) - that same procedure will appear a minimum of 10 times. The factory manual is almost useless.
AllData takes out and offers you JUST the writeups for your specific model so you're not paging down hundreds of PDF pages to find something.
I recommend it. I get nothing for that recommendation except perhaps a thanks from a few people who've started using it.
