My car is still being repaired from a fender bender last month.
Leading evidence: 'Repair from a fender bender last month' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). I hit a deer in my 2001 C4, well actually the deer ran into my rear quarter panel - nothing too serious.

I never have used deer whistles but I had 2 friends that did and both hit deer with them on.

She just stood there looking at the beauty of my Porsche (okay, maybe it was the headlights in her eyes).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was driving around midnight and out of nowhere comes a deer.
She just stood there looking at the beauty of my Porsche (okay, maybe it was the headlights in her eyes). I hit the brakes and turned to the right, but couldn't manage to avoid her. I hit her rear hind quarters probably at around 20-25mph.
Now I don't know if German engineering is this good or if I just got lucky, but instead of smashing up my front end and coming through the windshield she was instead lifted up off the car and spun around. The only damage was two chips out of the left front headlight assembly! Talk about breathing easy again. The deer took off after that. Now I need to find a new front headlight, but it's sure better than what could have happend. If anyone has a headlight assembly for the left side of a 2000 C4 Cab 996 I'd be interested in it. However, if you name is Sean Banerjee, I'd rather you just keep to yourself.
PS - You can see the deer fur still on the bumber.
It shows that Porsche brakes are strong and effective
When i used to live in Solon (OH) near Cleveland, there were many deers around and every day I heard of someone hitting one. They usually destroyed the car upon impact. Good to hear that you and your car are both OK.
cheers,
Good to hear you and your car escaped major damage. I have a spare stock unit from my '99 (non-litronic), although I'd prefer to sell it as a set.
Can't tell from the pic if yours is litronic, so PM me if you're still interested.
Congrats - you got away pretty clean. I grew up in Michigan and know plenty of people who have had major damage done to cars much bigger than a Porsche after hitting a deer.
I think that was a lot of my luck. Being in the Porsche so low to the ground I just kind of scooped the deer up and spun it around. Had I been in the MDX I'm sure it would have killed the deer and done a lot of damage to the car.
Actually if I remember right, in OH, it used to be legal (not sure if it is still now or not) to take the deer home if you hit it and kill it on the spot with your car. There was a story of a guy who hit a deer with his car, was very upset upon seeing the deer still standing in front of his totaled car, he then got out and charged on the deer, wrestled it and killed it. Man, I was shocked when I heard it in the news...
My bud hit a bird once and the bird impaled itself in the front grill of his car. However, it was impaled with the head and the beak pointing out!
He had no idea he had hit the bird, but he said he sure got a lot of disgusted and dirty looks from people as he pulled into a shopping mall.
Hey glad to see you weren't hurt. I know how it feels to have an accident. My car is still being repaired from a fender bender last month. Things happen and believe me your damage seems minimal. Lucky it didn't flip and come through the windshield. Check with your dealer I'm sure they can repair it very quickly.

I just heard about deer whistles. I'm going to have to check into them. I drive in deer populated areas frequently and I certainly don't want another encounter.
This brings up an interesting thought. Last summer I hit a bird head on going around a curve (slightly exceeding the speed limit). The bird hit my license plate and sheared it right off the car. I put the plate and frame in the trunk and thought I had a perfect excuse for not having a front plate, should I get a ticket. Well, come September, I get a ticket. Start to tell the cop my story, he couldn't care less. Go to court, show the judge the plate/frame with bird feather impalled between the two and bird entrails smeared on the plate and, after grossing out, she dismissed the ticket.
My thought though is that I've hit two things now, and things come in 3's....

Q: Is there any real proof that the deer whistles work?
A: As it turns out, this HAS been studied, and those little whistles
do NOT affect deer at all. The sound produced by these whistles
is a high frequency sound, quite out of the hearing range of the
deer! Deer have a relatively low frequency range of hearing similar
to cows.
The plastic covering has two chips in it. I didn't realize at first that the lower triangle portion was sold as a separate piece, so I assumed the whole thing had to come out. I've got to check exactly where the chips are to see if its the just the triangle, the headlamp, or both. The 2nd chip is hard to see in the picture, but is much larger than the one on the bottom.
That sucks. I hit a deer in my 2001 C4, well actually the deer ran into my rear quarter panel - nothing too serious. But my wife hit a deer in her lexus... I hate those frQ#king wood rats.

DEER SUCK
I admit there is no definitive scientific evidence that the deer whistles work as advertised. My experiences are anecdotal evidence at best, but the few times I hit a deer or came close, the car had no deer whistles and when I have the whistles, deer seem not to linger in the road in front of my car.
If it's just snake oil, no big deal, I'm out $5. I guess the other alternative is to cover my 911 in a combination of coyote **** and rotten eggs. That seems to keep the deer out of my yard. Might even keep the car jackers away too.
I've got a set of whistles the mount on the bumper of my pickup which supposedly scare the deer out of your way. They look like little bitty megaphones. Wonder where the best place to mount them on the pcar is...
Seriously, I'm glad you and your car are ok. I hit one a few years ago with a big SUV and it tore the hell out it.
I think I'll hold off on the deer whistles.
On a better note, the two chips I have are only in the small triangle portion of the headlamp. Talk about getting away cheap. Replacement is $25-$40. I can't believe I hit that thing as I did and all it's costing me is $40. Feeling lucky!
Good option! That really works against deer hits? I use it against martens along with dog hair. Lock your dog in the trunk for 2 minutes and you'll never have a marten again coming close to your car!
The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place to live, but deer like to call this place home too. I have had a few close calls with deer and hit one once in the wifes car when we took our infant daughter (she 11 now) for a drive to get her to fall asleep. All were okay including the deer, it ran away.
Close call story:
I was driving from Bend to Eugene late one night and was about to pass this pickup in front of me. The pass didnt feel right so I chilled. Ten seconds later the guy in front of me plowed into a deer. Not sure what I did to deserve the good Karma, but hey Ill take it.
Hello, I also hit a deer with my 1999 996 cab. In Newbury Ma. about 2 years ago. It was about 5am and I was going for my early am blast when this monster appeared out of the mist. I locked them up and at the moment before impact, I must admit, I closed my eyes, (I could not bear to see the destruction of my baby) anyway I heard the thud, looked up and what did I see? The deer actually was flipping head over *** right over my car and crashed about 30 feet into the guard rail. Then, like nothing happened he got up looked at me like I was nuts and then ran away. I really did not want to see the results but I pulled over and to my amazement there was nothing but one piece of his fur in a hairline crack in the gelcoat of the bumber.p car 1 deer 0.
I hit a deer one night riding my bike (1990 VFR 750). The bike and I went up and over the deer's hindquarters, landed on the road and after a couple of wobbles, I got the bike under control. The deer was badly injured and I had to use a rock to finish the deed. I took the bike in for the insurance claim, and with the deer fur still stick in the chin fairing, they had no problem with replacing it and one of the lower fairing pieces.
