You may have to reassociate fob with alarm ECU (check your manual for this and also battery guidance) - involves pressing the button whilst key blade is in door lock or ignition (sorry, forget which)

As the remote uses a rolling code (new code every lock cycle) if the remote sender has been activated more than 256 times and less than 1024 times with the receiver out of range or while the vehicle battery is disconnected the unit must be resynchronized as follows:

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Guys Where can i get a new battery for my remote key fob, do i have to go through Porsche?....its a 996 C2 Cheers Steve

POST 2Original post

The remote uses a normal button (CR) battery like many calculators, watches etc. CR-2032 (20mm diameter by 3.2 mm thickness) Just carefully prise open fob and swap over. I think it is easier to align rubber button downwards and then click "lid" over the PCB. Otherwise I found that doing it the other way resulted in the "lid" (the other lid this time!) not quite aligning with PCB, leaving a gap. You may have to reassociate fob with alarm ECU (check your manual for this and also battery guidance) - involves pressing the button whilst key blade is in door lock or ignition (sorry, forget which) I think they are £1-£2 from Wilkinsons, Boots WHSmith etc To be fair, the first time my OPC changed it. Whilst handing me my invoice, they pointed out that their battery change and reprogram would, at a grand £3.50, be the cheapest OPC bill I would ever receive! Just check first, as technically they just charged me the battery. I wouldn't have been surprised if they had slipped on 1/4 unit labour (not that I don't love my OPC, I just wouldn't be surprised anywhere in the motor industry!)

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Excellent info GT4 thanks very much BTW like the kit on your C4, i am looking to do something like that on my C2 Cheers Steve

POST 4Original post

No probs. Porsche advise any remote range of 5 ft or less suggests new battery is required. Reset by manually unlocking the car door and wilst the key is still in the door, press the button, lock/unlock button. This re-synchs the electronics if it is time that has caused the car to forget the remote. As the remote uses a rolling code (new code every lock cycle) if the remote sender has been activated more than 256 times and less than 1024 times with the receiver out of range or while the vehicle battery is disconnected the unit must be resynchronized as follows: - Switch on the ignition (ignition key must have the correct transponder). - Switch off the ignition. - Remove the key and press the remote sender button within 6 seconds after the ignition key has been removed The activation counter will then be reset to zero.

POST 5Original post

Just to add to GT4's suggestions: Also note that the alarm system goes into energy-saving mode after 5 days of not being used, and the remote function is switched off. To exit sleep mode, just switch the ignition on with the key. If none of the above works, you can reset the remote processor by inserting the key fob battery reverse polarity for 2-3 seconds. And it that doesn't work, you probably need a new remote.
