Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi to all on the forum, I am the proud new owner of a 2003 C4S 996 with 42k miles. Probably a little early to starting thinking of a remap, but am thinking of this as a future mod and have the following questions... Will I notice the performance gain? I am using Shell v-power fuel, does this make a difference with the remap? And should I only stick to this fuel? Is there any risk involved? Would I need to notify my Insurance ? i.e. how would they know? Will I notice a change in sound? Will I notice a change in fuel economy? Newbie question: why doesn't porsche use this map out of the factory? Is the remap worthwhile? Answers to any of these questions would help, thanks Jeremy

My tuppence worth - dont do it. I believe conventional wisdom on here as can best be divined is dont tune the normally aspirated cars but you can work away with the turbos. Using the higher octane fuel is the only real tip that stands up. I doubt you would notice any differnce in sound (get a sports exhaust - best mod of the lot - feels like you have more power even if you dont). Fuel economy might suffer a little, insurance company will drop you like a bag of dirt if they detect it post accident, you will potentially shorten the engine's life as by definition more power means greater stresses. In summary for normally aspirated engines Id say the risks/demerits/cost outweigh the modest benefits to be gained. Its fair to say that most manufacturers maps are a little conservative to allow for variables over a mass produced range for different environments but the factory map is set up carefully for good reason by people who know what they are doing. If you havent got one, get a sports exhaust (Oettles are less than £400 and the best mod I ever put on my C2 - really miss in on the turbo).
