Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Once done refit wheel torque bolts to 120nm (check with Richard I am sure that's right setting) then move to next wheel.
Leading evidence: 'Check with richard i am sure' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check with richard i am sure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I suggest the first thing to do would be to change the brake fluid and bleed the brakes.

Pick a wheel and remove it, you will see the bleed screws at the top of the caliper, pop off the rubber caps and affix the tubing to the rear bleed screw, put the other end of the tubing into the clear bottle, simply undo the bleed screw using the 10mm spanner (usually just half a turn will suffice) then you will either see bubbles go down the line or pure fluid, if bubbles await until you get a stream of fluid with no bubbles, if no bubbles of air tighten bleed screw and put the cap back on then do same on front, most outer bleed screw.
Use 10mm spanner (usually just half a turn will suffice)

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have only had my 996 C4S a few weeks, but I think the brakes are soft. If I pump them they still feel quite soft.
Am able to stop OK, but I must say they are a bit disappointing considering the size of those calipers.
Is this normal?
Jeremy
No, it isn't normal, and most people note how firm the pedal is - not how soft.
I suggest the first thing to do would be to change the brake fluid and bleed the brakes.
Agree, they should not feel soft but you do have to push the pedal harder than most other cars as the Porsche is not so "over-servo'd"
Suggest you test drive another 911 to compare with yours.

Bleeding brakes:
You just need a small amount of Dot 4 or 5.1 to top up if necessary, 2 ft of 3 or 4mm bore clear windscreen washer tubing, a clear plastic bottle (pref. 1 ltr size) and a 10mm ring spanner.
WARNING - Never pump brakes when a bleed screw is un-done, this method can only be done on a non-ABS car, if you use
the pedal-pumping technique on a car with ABS you can damage the system.
The 911 can be done simply by gravity. Once done refit wheel torque bolts to 120nm (check with Richard I am sure that's right setting) then move to next wheel.
Note - Keep the fluid above minimum throughout the process.
