Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. The dealer replaced the water pump and two gallons of coolant on the CPO warranty.

, and had to put in about 1/2 gallon of coolant and water about a month ago after the check coolant light came on a few times.

So today it went to the shop to replace rear tires and to have the coolant issue checked out, and sure enough, the water pump is going bad and will cost an additional $800-900 to fix.

2006 with 64,000 miles , the water pump pully shaft breaks off , why would the shaft break this easy , so now im replacing the water pump ( can any body tell me what kind of antifreeze to use )
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Re: water pump failer
The pump was probably going bad for a while. It leaks out of the weep hole for a while, but can fail dramatically at some point. I notice my car running low on coolant at around 55K miles and found dried coolant residue on the outside of the pump at the weep hole. I had the pump replaced shortly after that. I was told by the service shop that the water pump is a real weakness on the Caymans and that they can go bad at around 50 - 60 K.
I noticed my car low on coolant again this weekend (I have about 104K miles on it now). I'll get it up on a lift soon and check to see if I see and indications of leaks. I put about a quart of distilled water in it to top it off.
It is very important that you use Porsche coolant in your car. Some non-service shops will tell you that the universal coolant will work - I wouldn't risk it.
Re: water pump failer
i found some antifreeze at autozone that was designed for all aluminun engine, it is orange and has a silicon base lubricant. i am wandering could it possibly work. the problem with the water pump was that the pully shaft broke off from the water pump.
i did see where the water pump was leaking a little so it would have to be chanaged anyway. i really believe that this was a factory defect and the shaft was already cracked.
Re: water pump pully shaft breaks off
Had a 1991 Carrera 4 that snapped an alternator shaft. It was pretty unique in the experience of the dealer mechanic. Probably your water pump was an outlier - all you need is a flaw just big enough to survive for several millions of cycles before growing to critical size......
The water pump was slowly leaking on my 2007 2.7L with 21K miles. The dealer replaced the water pump and two gallons of coolant on the CPO warranty. I suspect this leak was there prior to my purchase.
Oh boy.
I think I'm having this issue.
2007 with approx 30K
Started hearing a strange noise on at idle. Like something loose around the exhaust.
It sounded like it would go away as the engine warmed up, but it doesn't sound "normal".
Today, I got a low coolant warning. Added almost 2 liters of coolant/water to fill her up.
I do notice some drips on the floor. but after a while sitting in the garage it stops.
Is this a DYI fix? or should I call my dealer?
Can't answer the DIY, it's definitely doable but have you got the time and talent ? And from what I hear it's not all that easy to burp the system of air. I can tell you I just had it done out of warranty and it cost me $800 even, after a 15% off labor coupon... Is it a tac=tac=tac at idle, coming from the front of the engine, not the exhaust?
Mine just started acting up last week at 49K miles... the noise its making sounds like an ungreased bearing? so I stopped driving the
Boxster
, but similar symptoms, started with a coolant smell and actually the dumb gauge is actually a tick higher (hotter) than normal. I'm out of warranty, so it will be a DIY and will be using the Prestone.
Made an appt with the dealer to drop off my car on Monday.
Luckily, I'm still under warranty. We'll see what the verdict is.
...you want to hear my conspiracy theory?
I JUST received a letter from my dealer about getting $100 on service or maintenance. HA!
Took the car in on Monday. They gave me a Cayenne S as a loaner
Car was ready end of day Tuesday but I couldn't pick it up until today (Wed).
As expected, water pump failure.
Covered under warranty (whew!).
...btw, that Cayenne S drives very well. It feels much smaller than it seems.
When I had it in for a 20k service I asked whether the coolant should be changed and was told no as the
Porsche
anti-freeze is made for lifetime. Didn't see anything in the service schedules either for coolant replacement intervals. He did point out that my pump has a small leak now at 27k miles.
Just turned 30k miles on my '
06 Cayman S
, and had to put in about 1/2 gallon of coolant and water about a month ago after the check coolant light came on a few times. So today it went to the shop to replace rear tires and to have the coolant issue checked out, and sure enough, the water pump is going bad and will cost an additional $800-900 to fix. Bummer... I'm 9 months off warranty.
Oh well... easy come easy go right? Incidentally, I got 30k out of my OEM Pilot Sport rear tires and still have another 5k-8k left on the fronts. Much better than I expected from those sticky tires!
Just wondering - what was the failure mode - seal leak, bearing failure, impeller failure? Any warning signs ahead of time? I have an 07 with 56k miles on the original pump.
Dealer or independent to replace everything? If you dont mind me asking ... how much?
I just inspected belt and pump on my 07
Cayman
at 140k km (90 k miles). Everything tight, clean and dry. I opted not to replace.
