Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

From what I gather I think the Tiptronic S stands for is the fact that upshift and downshift buttons for gear changing are on the steering wheel .Thats what my car has anyway .

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I understand my 02 Carrera should have a Mercedes gearbox, does anyone know which exact model Mercedes box it is? Thinking of taking my car as it's reached 94K and it's time for a fluid & filter change to my local Independent Mercedes specialist and just wanted to give them a model number. Thanks as always for any information.

Hi Moko Not sure if this link helps 5HP19HLA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_5HP_transmission

POST 3Original post

Was there a difference between Tiptronic and Tiptronic S?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That's interesting as on other threads I've read that Mercedes manufactured the Tiptronic boxes for the 2002 models onwards themselves. ZF produced all the earlier Tip boxes but according to the Wikipedia page you linked it looks like they did manufacture the 02 ones as well. I wonder what the truth is for 02 cars ZF or Mercedes?

Hi Mervo From what I gather I think the Tiptronic S stands for is the fact that upshift and downshift buttons for gear changing are on the steering wheel .Thats what my car has anyway . Somebody may come along and correct me if I'm wrong

POST 6Original post

All 996 autos had the Tiptronic S gearbox. Gen1 cars had a ZF box. Gen2 cars boxes were made by Daimler-Chrysler*. *Daimler-Chrysler = Mercedes

Many thanks for the update. Some really good information in there, especially the link to the Mercedes site and the upgrades possible!
