Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Seems the decision is yet to be confirmed this year for the 911 to go plugin hybrid following the 918, Cayenne and Panamera: Müller: Porsche 911 PHEV Under Negotiation For Production - The Truth About Cars The question, would it sell? My info about plugin hybrid is very limited. But if it provides a boost in performance like it did to the 918, then I'm in. But if it kills the car like it did to the Cayenne and Panamera, I'd rather see it not coming to the 911.

POST 2Original post

I presume it would simply drop in as another model in the already vast array of 911 models. maybe replace the 4S, since doing the front wheels as electric is an easy hybrid option to add extra performance. Then it would depend on how it goes if they put it into more models. I doubt they would simply put it in every 911, that would be a huge risk.

POST 3Original post

I think it would be an independent model within the 991 family, perhaps 911E or 911H. It would have to be a light weight model in order to offset battery weight penalty. Interesting, it would be another CAFE feather.

POST 4Original post

Not a CAFE feather. Cafe fines are nothing. EU FINES are BIG The TT puts out 227 grams. The 2021 limit is 95 grams. almost 12,600 Euro fine. They really have to cut fleet emissions or the penalty fines is going to hurt them.

POST 5Original post

^ so you're saying all 911 will become hybrid?

POST 6Original post

No, only that the need to reduce emissions. Spread the pain around. Get some cars under the limits so the fines costs can be reduced. They have repeatedly said that they are conscious of this. Thus, the new 981 and 991 will be turbos. However, they need to do a lot better than that. See Reducing CO2 emissions from passenger cars - European Commission See the fines start in 2019. Upon reading that closely, since they sell less than 300K cars, their target is 45% reduction from 2007 levels. I dont know what their 2007 levels were but I am pretty sure that the have a long way to go. The fines are too stiff. Right now CAFE fines last time reported were under $100 per car. Nobody is going to car. $10,000/car? Somebody is going to care. Realistically, if you pay $170, then paying $180 is probably fine. But if you pay $70 and tomorrow $80, those people will care. The fines are not prorated per cost of the car. They are rated on emissions. I found this for 2009 https://www.energy.eu/car-co2-emissions/porsche.php TT- 326. Big penalty Cayman 223

POST 7Original post

Chows, which car models are meeting the EU emission nowadays or close enough? And which are far away? Any idea?

POST 8Original post

New cars’ CO2 emissions well below Europe’s 2015 target — European Environment Agency (EEA) 2015 target is 130 grams. The avg car sold in the EU is 123 grams. They do not say if individual carmakers have met their goals yet. Data to be published end of 2015. There is also the issue of credits, which I don't understand. Sounds complex.

POST 9Original post

What if manufacturers produce different versions of their cars? Ones for the EU and others for the rest of the world?

POST 11Original post

You think that's going to happen? They are a German car maker part of the EU. To sell cars in other countries, they have to comply with the local country laws. So, for example, in the US all sidemarkers must be Amber. I don't know what other countries demand. Some required real spare tires. They build ONE PCM. That PCM is put into every Porsche sold. The fundamental technology for PASM is the same for every Porsche sold, regardless of model. The XM radio is the same one in every Porsche model as is the GSM cell phone card, etc. No way are they going to build different engines for different countries. Noobies is right. But they do put different engines in different countries. China gets a base 4 banger Macan. Oz gets a Diesel. US gets the S and Turbo but no base or Diesel (yet).

POST 12Original post

^ I wasn't referring to only Porsche. Still I read earlier that Porsche produces a 981 with less HP to one of the Northern European countries (forget which one) because of the high emission regulations. So Porsche is doing it already. As for when the EU restrictions apply, still Toyota for example may produce different versions of their cars. Some for the EU and others for the rest of the world. I'm just guessing... I'm not saying I'm logical or right.

POST 13Original post

Oh yeah, that's true. Some versions of Toyota MRs were more powerful than US version. Same for Datsun, I think In fact, same was true for Porsche. 911S was not imported to the US. RS America was the US version of a EU car so that was definitely true. 959 was not imported. Lots of cars were never imported to the US. But ... I think these were cars that did not meet US DOT standards. So they could not be imported with a lot of changes. Eventually, some were imported. Bill Gates bought a 959 but it had to be converted. pretty sure and a law was passed. But it still had to meet emissions. But that was then and this is now and it was the other way around. The US got the slow versions. I can't see them building a Cayman S with 330HP for the US and 280HP for the EU so it meets EU laws. Can you? The US market is not the biggest market anymore. China is.

POST 14Original post

Almost no one will buy a hybrid if it's only to save on fuel or reduce emissions taxes -- that's not why 911 buyers buy 911s. They will buy them if it improves performance. It's the future. I maintain my bet that the 911 mostly likely to go hybrid is the "Turbo", though another possibility is there being a hybrid (which like all other 911s, will go turbocharged) that offers something a bit different than what will wear the Turbo/Turbo S badges. The Turbo makes the most sense as they're intended to be technofests. Porsche already calls the Turbo/Turbo S a "technology showcase".

POST 15Original post

True. See Keeping it clean: Reflections on EU Regulations on CO2 Emissions for Automotive Manufacturers The EPA fined Hyundai/Kia $100M but that was for lying to the public about MPG. $100M is not peanuts like the CAFE fines. Note about the credits. I suspect that is part of the reason for the plugin. But the article hints that big price increases are coming for those that don't meet the mandates. You also got to wonder how the fines will be distributed. Will they take a $100M hit and spread it over 200,000 cars? Or will it be prorated across the price tiers?

POST 17Original post

When I went to the dealer with my son on Thursday and saw my turbo for the first time in the flesh, I was shocked to find this sticker on the car: The turbo's fuel economy was rated Very Poor as per the Saudi standards!!! I don't care about fuel consumption/cost after all I bought the car for its performance but it embarrassed me in front of my son who's green environment advocate. When I ordered my car I convinced him that Porsche is a very environment friendly vs others in the market. But the sticker proved me wrong and made me look like a liar.

POST 18Original post

Here it's surfacing again. Flat 6 with turbo for the 992 and hybrid models too: http://blog.caranddriver.com/porsche-911-news-991-goes-turbo-992-to-get-plug-in-option/ It seems everybody knows what's the next. What we don't know is the look to lure the fans to care less about NA engines.

POST 19Original post

Weird...I would think being in the middle east fuel and oil wouldn't be an issue...very poor = good, take some more of the oil from my backyard? no?

POST 20Original post

I don't care about cost associated with fuel consumption. What I care about is that my son is green energy advocate. He cares much about environment. I told him Porsche is very economical when it comes to fuel in comparison to the rest when I placed my order. However, the tag proved me wrong.

POST 21Original post

992 is too far away. Porsche is he designated architect for all of VAG's sports car and they are designing the platform, including for Lambo and Audi. This upsets Audi and was why the rushed out the latest R8. Nobody really knows what the next generation 911 will look like yet. I doubt PAG knows. All talk ... It could easily be hybrid and the obvious thing is trickle down from the 918. All these blogs do is want clicks. Click me. Look see what wrote and buy something. Generate buzz ... I would wait and see what unfolds as an internal VAG power struggle unfolds over the years.
