Porsche might back me up on this but to check for any problems take it out on the hwy up to 170 and see if you don't like what you hear at speed or after slowing.
Leading evidence: 'tires' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tires' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check any problems take it out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Had same issue, turned out to be tires...tires werent bad but Ive noticed on the auds in the pasti and seemingly the porsche after a certain amount of miles I get a lot of road noise from certain brands of tires.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Over the past ~2 months I've noticed a low pitch hum/resonant drone from the rear of the car that only is audible from about 55mph to 62mph. Not related to throttle position nor clutch position from my tests. Is there with coasting at that speed, accelerating through that speed range, and decelerating through that speed range. I have had absolutely no vibrations or driving issues at all (knock on wood.)
Tire pressures look fine, and I have not noticed any vibration or wobble.
Any ideas? Wheel bearing maybe? Was planning on having it serviced for 45k maintenance soon.
Thanks for reading
Well I hate to be the one to have to give you what may or may not be bad news here, but this sounds like it may MAY, be the internal sealed bearings for your gearbox. As they wear out the races they tend to sound just like what you describing. If this is the case it will continue to get worse and potentially more expensive. If you end up ruling everything else out this is probably the culprit.
Let me know if I can be of any help to you with this, if it does end up being the problem. These are a bit tricky to rebuild. We do them all the time though.
Warmest Regards,
Erik Johnson

Is it worse under acceleration versus at speed? If worse under acceleration loads that is indicative of transmission issues, but if it is constant, I would look at wheel bearings and tires.
Thanks for thoughts so far.
It is constant at those speeds, independent of throttle or clutch. (ie NOT worse with acceleration) I'm 4th owner of car but second owner on these tires... I'll look into their age/wear...
Since you first mentioned it always being a specific speed on and off the gas that's why I'm figuring tires. Most bearings I've had throwing trouble at me would change noise or completely quit making noise cornering and accelerating. Bearings when bad are going to be putting off much more heat than standard operating temps. You can feel hubs temp by feeling the wheel since they are mated and the heat will pass directly into the wheel. If you dearly regret touching the wheel its a good bet your bearings are bad.
Wheels did not feel hot today after a 10 minute highway drive.
I did notice today that the drone/hum is also audible again at 70-72mph. So for those of you keeping score, it is noticeable at 55-62mph, then again at 70-72ish.
Not sure that this helps, but I figured I'd mention.
I'll have it looked at soon
I have a similar noise at similar speeds. It's more noticeable on concrete roads vs. asphalt. After much road testing and checking, I think it's my worn front tires. They are not close to the wear markers, but are pretty worn. Time to order a set of HTZ IIIs
Had same issue, turned out to be tires...tires werent bad but Ive noticed on the auds in the pasti and seemingly the porsche after a certain amount of miles I get a lot of road noise from certain brands of tires.
I'm not a sound engineer but I can say that the shape of the cabin acts like a huge megaphone for noises. Due to the driveline being all in the rear, the beginning point is small where most sounds will come from and widens into your eardrum intensifying vibrations and sounds from my experience.
Delayed update:
It was the tires.
The rears were cupped. My indy found that there was too much negative camber and toe on the rears from a previous set up.
An alignment and new set of Sumitomo's are all done now.
I appreciate all the input. Figured I'd give this thread some closure.
Thanks
Shhhhhhh
OK I'm with you but most think it's the gearing or bearings so we have 10:1 odds. I'm betting $100, how much are you betting?
You're splitting? You're only going to break even.
I had a similar experience. Replaced rear tires (w/ matching Bridgestones) and didnt solve it. Had wheels straightened and balanced. No major issue but part of the process.
Ended up being a front wheel bearing. Part's are cheap, labor not so much...
Do the easy stuff, buy my money is on the bearing.
i still have this symptom even with a new set of tires,,
the noise comes in different speed ranges,, different range for each tip gear,,
can someone enlighten me please?
It's road noise a lot of the time. All surfaces make different sounds. Also all tires make different sounds. Alignment can even cause the tires to rise to noise. Some tires when worn down wheels even become unbalanced. Porsche might back me up on this but to check for any problems take it out on the hwy up to 170 and see if you don't like what you hear at speed or after slowing. My personal favorite is the autobahn. Number 81 Wuerzburg to Weinsbronn please. One very scenic route headed south. Did I mention wide sweeping turns of pure bliss valley scenery?
No matter what I'm making more money on the bet now. Can I collect on the bet now
One of the funny ones is concrete slab hwy. Heated they sometime make more of a rough ride. Figuring its always the same you'ld think the car is screwed up.
Please remember to check bearings by feeling the wheels at the hubs. It's saves a lot of money and diagnostic wondering.
last night, i took the car for one-hour ride,, i took her up to 130MPH,, no whine or noise what so ever,,
i also felt the wheels and found that the fronts was much hotter than the rears,,
Cars do make noise by just operating. An example that makes sense to me is figuring if I were the tires or drive train I'd be making one heck of a racket. Even super lubed and perfectly operating gears and universal joints will make noise. So....tires can pull the same trick of different revolutions they'll make noises on and off. I'd be figuring if its at different speeds the likelyhood of it being drive train between hubs and trans like the CV boot area is low since that part just climbs to higher rpms as speed goes up. Diagnosing over the internet is pretty hit and miss. You could check those rubber boots for being sealed to prevent a real problem.
