So we have both now, engine oil temperature gauge on the left and coolant temperature gauge on the right.
The user manual states the following for coolant temperature:
"
Pointer in the lower area – engine cold
Avoid high engine speeds and heavy engine loading.
"
Shouldn't that be a concern for the engine oil temperature instead?
Therefore, I wait for the engine oil to rise before driving in Sport mode.
The coolant temperature gauge rises faster than the oil's after starting the engine. But the engine oil gauge drops faster to low level after leaving the car for an hour or so.
Agree I've always thought oil temp is more important. Does the Turbo have the little blue engine symbol light to indicate the engine is not warmed up enough for full revs? The GT3 has a little blue light. The manual says don't exceed 6k (I think) until the light goes out.
No!
Does the GT3 have the turbo boost symbol to indicate the car is ready for take off to jump above traffic jams and road blocks? The 991 turbo has a little button on the center console but I didn't try it. The manual says don't exceed 6k miles (I think) per jump until the break in period ends :naughty:
i assume that low coolant temp means that the engine has not had a chance for thermal expansion, and clearances are reduced.. so i keep it below a few k and also use light throttle opening until about 165 F water temp. I believe BMW M3's also have some sort of temp link to the tach as an aid to the driver. multigrade oils should not have a problem staying within a good viscosity range regardless of temp (withing sane ranges!), but it takes time for the crank bearings and piston big ends to expand from a cold start. i also accelerate very gently for the first second after a start-stop cycle because the oil pressure goes to zip (probably unnecessary because the oil has more than enough lubricity to protect the bearings etc after a brief shutdown.
Hmm... Not much feedback yet
In my Cayman the behaviour is exactly so. Of course it´s the oil temperature and only that bothers. I do wait until at least 90C. The manual is confusing, just like you wrote earlier that automatic engine shutoff is incompatible with breaking in. Guess the manual is written by more than one guy. Not forgetting the US lawyers who added 4,000 rpm LOL.
