Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I'm viewing a C4s tomorrow, it had Clutch ims and rms replaced at 40K. It had a clutch at 77k but no ims replacement. It's now on 80k question is if I get the car would you change the ims for piece of mind?

POST 2Original post

Just in case you don't realise, it's the IMS bearing that is the potential issue with these cars NOT the IMS itself. If you key IMS AND bearing into the Search Forum function at the top right of this page (leave the author blank) you will get dozens of threads discussing the subject. With regards to your question have a read of this link to a previous thread. --> http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=136139&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=ims+bearing

POST 3Original post

No, and I wouldn't want a car that's had it changed. Original is one of the safest bets. Everytime you change the bearing you're putting a fresh bullet in the barrel of Russian Roulette.

POST 4Original post

Hi I might not change it, but I would certainly want it inspected, which is 8/10ths of the work already, so many people just change it "while you are there". As Alex says there are risks associated with changing the bearing. Just price in an inspection. Berni

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I'm getting it inspected at a local specialist starting with bore scope

POST 6Original post

In my view, best way would be to drop the sump pan. Then you get a visual inspection under pistons and check any signs of metal in the pan/filter. The bearing was designed by Porsche as lifetime and is not a consumerable item. Only a small percentage affected failure. If it bothered me I would go for a Porsche upgrade bearing, but that is a lot of work and expense for many. Fit a magentic sump plug and change with quality oil every 6 months for piece of mind. Just enjoy and drive the car.

POST 7Original post

I think Berni29 means inspection of the bearing next time you have access to it. An inspection of the car does not cover this.

POST 8Original post

I think the advice above is spot on. The magnetic Sump plug & regular oil changes is good practice & leaving things alone is akin to letting sleeping dogs lie. if ain't broke etc etc My Idie, who has changed many perfectly good IMS bearings, wouldn't do mine as he feared after 110,000 miles it would do more harm than good considering there was no evidence of anything untoward. We will revisit the topic if the box needs to come out but until that time I'm just lovin' driving my car !

POST 9Original post

My RMS is leaking so I'm upgrading the IMS bearing to ceramic "while they're in there". Totally get both sides of the argument though, it's not something that's preying on my mind and I wouldn't have got it done otherwise. Actually not that expensive either and as the tensioner seals are iffy as well I'll be getting a few issues sorted in one hit. Comes down to personal choice.

POST 10Original post

I agree it is personal choice, but I think you are making a bad one. I would expect it will harm the resale value of your car and you will have to change it again in a few years. MC

POST 11Original post

As above. The ceramic ones are crap and have been known to explode.

POST 12Original post

Oh s**t I have one of them fitted by the previous owner....wasn't cheap either....

POST 13Original post

I've always been of the opinion that the IMS hysteria has been hyped up a lot more by aftermarket sellers of replacement bearings than by owners of cars that have suffered genuine catastrophic failure. Plus, why anyone would replace something that was never designed as a service item that doesn't need attention with something the manufacturer life's at 40,000 miles is beyond me. Just forget about it, enjoy the car and have a cry if it ever does happen :thumb:

POST 14Original post

What he said... and don't you ever venture into the US forums

POST 15Original post

Ironically it'll probably benefit resale, because so many buyers want 'IMS & RMS done". It's only when they buy the car and join the forums they realise what's what!
