Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Pelican Parts: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I bought a 2001 996 with a knock. Thinking it's a IMS but here is what I have found thus far. Pulled the tranny [tiptronic] was a challange inspected the IMS looks perfect and is a double row no damaged seal turns like a new one. Inspected the oil filter no metal but looks like it was on there for 100k miles. Then pulled the pan omg I have never seen anything that bad the whole bottom was filled with thick sludge looked like tar. But no metal anywhere at all. So is the knock caused by bad oil/sludge. Has any one had experience with knocking due to bad oil or lack of maintenance. Car has 140k.

POST 2Original post

Hi, I can only offer one bit of advice: try changing the oil a couple of times over the next few thousand miles to see if that alleviates the problem. Do you have maintenance records to see exactly what the previous owners did? Good luck. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
