Hey AsianImage, here's a little table that I included in my post way back when I installed the air horns.

I just installed the GRIOT's Italian Air Horns on my 996 cab.

I installed the Griot's Italian Air Horns in my 930...and they are outstanding!

I had a set of the red ones installed using a metal strap between the brackets for the 3rd radiator behind the front bumper.

Just used the wire from one of the horns rather than wire up the relay that comes with the kit....tape off the other wire that went to the second horn and it works just fine.

Suggestion
I thought that it mihgt allow it to run a bit cooler, but that's not the case.....on hot days it still runs slightly to the right of the "0" like it always did.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
33 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

as for sound bytes...I have seen/heard others...still not acurrate enough...you got to be there in person to hear this thing!
I just installed the GRIOT's Italian Air Horns on my 996 cab. I was never happy with the "pep boys" sounding standard horn on my car and knew I was going to go with air horns. I had them on my BMW and loved them. I read about the GRIOTS one and bought it right away. Let me tell you...LOUD is an understatement. The sound is very "Euro" exactly what I wanted...and its pretty loud.
This install as some of you know is a hassle because you have to remove the whole dang front bumper...that sucked. But...oh well...while we had the bumper off I also made a wire pull for my hood release just in case the car ever loses juice and I am locked out of my car, I have a pull that will release the hood.
OK on with the pics
Before...pulled the car on some wood planks to get it up enough to work on
and the bumper is begining to come off...
and out she comes...
she is naked!!
Frontal nudity!
Bumper cover..
Fitting the air horns
stock OEM horns...
finalize placement
putting it all back together...
good as new!
Thanks for looking guys and gals!
Thanks for the write-up and the pics; it was very informative.
What is the compressor-driven tool, a socket wrench? What did you need that for?
Thanks,
CP
That was the compressor for the air horns. I am telling you, these f*ckers are loud!
Hey AsianImage, here's a little table that I included in my post way back when I installed the air horns. The Italian Air Horns are louder than a pneumatic riveter and almost as loud as a jet taking off at 100'!!
Environmental Noise
Weakest sound heard 0dB
Normal conversation (3-5') 60-70dB
Telephone dial tone 80dB
City Traffic (inside car) 85dB
Train whistle at 500' 90dB
Subway train at 200' 95dB
Level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss 90 - 95dB
Power mower 107dB
Power saw 110dB
Pain begins 125dB
Pneumatic riveter at 4' 125dB
Italian Air Horns at 4' 139dB
Jet engine at 100' 140dB
Death of hearing tissue 180dB
Loudest sound possible 194dB
I love it!!! I plan on replacing my stock bumper cover with a gt3 cover at some point, so this mod just got added to my list of things to do at the same time...
Hey thanks guys! Glad I could help...
To answer some of the above..
the compression tool...is an air wrench. Is that what you are asking about? He used it to remove the nuts and bolts for the bumper. It is pretty extensive. Like 8 hex nuts, 4 8mm, etc etc...so there are a bunch if little screws here and there.
as for problems? None at all...except...if you have never taken it off before take your time. Luckily my installed did one other Porsche before, so he at least kind of knew where to look for bolts to remove the bumper. If you have never done it before, take you time. He said there are a couple "hidden" bolts etc. Like behind the side markers etc. But pretty straight forward. The other "problem" I can think of is the actual install. Obviously it is not plug and play. So you have to figure out a way to mount the new air horn. My pal had to bend some brackets and custom fit it. he also ran the wires and relay and fuse back into the body of the car so none of the important stuff is outside.
The GRIOTS airhorn is a VERY NICE PIECE...well worth the price. My buddy who has been an installer for many years was very impressed by it. The best part is the air compressor like mentioned above is actually built ON THE UNIT. Not like the Hella versions that come with the horn and a compressor and some hoses. He really liked these horns quality.
and lastly...YES! If you are doing any sort of bumper removal..upgrading or facelifting...I completely recommend doing this. It is the perfect time.
as for sound bytes...I have seen/heard others...still not acurrate enough...you got to be there in person to hear this thing! hahahaa...its pretty dang loud. And my buddy pointed out...it's UNIQUE. If I hear this going off in a parking lot...I will KNOW IT IS MY CAR. So that is another added bonus. If your factory alarm goes off...you will know it is you.
I installed the Griot's Italian Air Horns in my 930...and they are outstanding! No 18 wheeler will ever fail to hear you if he starts moving into your lane!! I think the red ones (there are 2 models...red and black) are rated at 130 decibles....VERY LOUD...and they also have that two-tone euro sound. They have the whole setup complete with the selfo-contained air compressor packed into a small package...easy to mount....recommend highly.
Go to the Griot's website...I think it's
www.griots.com
and in the search box at the top right side of the page....enter the search criteria "Italian air horns"....and you'll find them. They are only $39.95 and well worth the money.
Chuck
Hi Noby...it is all one contained unit. That is what makes it so great.
As for sounding great, that is completely subjective. What YOU think sounds good...can be very different from what I think sounds good.
The only way is to hear it in person...maybe go to some car meets and ask around...people will gladly toot toot for you! hahahaa...
AI..nice job, my choice of warning to others are my Fabspeed by-pass-pipes
I hope you took the opportunity to clean out your radiators, you would be suprised to see what's in there.
I had a set of the red ones installed using a metal strap between the brackets for the 3rd radiator behind the front bumper. They went right in there with no problem. Just used the wire from one of the horns rather than wire up the relay that comes with the kit....tape off the other wire that went to the second horn and it works just fine. They do make you very "audibly visible".....
No, we just installed one. There are two horns sandwiched together in the Griots kit.
Unless you have teeny tiny hands - you will need to take the bumper off.
Loren actually did the install on mine...and he knew where all the little hidden screws were....I would have taken most of the day to get it done, but since he's BTDT it went rather quickly...like the screws up inside the sidelights (have to take out the sidelights to see them) and a few other hard to see places. He didn't even have any screws left over when the project was done....that was encouraging!!
Loren....have you installed your set yet?
Great write up. VERY funny video. How loud are these Griot horns compared to the train horns in the video? And can you really get a ticket for your horns being too loud?
Great. I would hate for anyone to do all that work and not do the radiators. Even better is separating them from the condensors and blowing some compressed air through 'em from the back side. You'd be amazed what comes out of them that way.
Viper's right....when I did the Air Horns it was clearly evident that there was a lot of crap sandwiched betweent he condenser and the radiator. Up to that point, I had been vacuuming out the area I could see without taking off the front bumper. I thought it was all clean in there...but was very surprised when I got the bumper off and saw how much was actually in there that you can't see. I will say that it hasn't made any difference in how hot my car runs. I thought that it mihgt allow it to run a bit cooler, but that's not the case.....on hot days it still runs slightly to the right of the "0" like it always did. If it makes a difference, it's in a degree or two that the gauge doesn't register.
