Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I think US cars started with 65 rather than the 60 used for the ROW cars and iirc the US got cabs before coupes.

Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

can't locate ID plate on the car for some reason which should have build date on it?
Porsche HQ Reading and/or an OPC should be able to tell you from the VIN Number. The 'Production Completion Date' used to be on the Certificate of Authenticity they used to produce on behalf of the PCGB.
1998 Model Year VIN Numbers started at 00061 in August 1997 so your car was over 5000 on from that. I suspect it was produced in early 1998, especially as it wasn't registered until March 17th.
My take on it would be that he got the 74th car built for the US market.
60 and 65 prefix cars would have been on the production line at the same time.
Further to the above I've done some reading and apparently the 996 was later to the US market due to it not initially being able to meet strict OBDII regulations. Very few 996s were exported to the US in Model Year 1998 and those that were, were Cabs.
Also, whilst the 996 was launched in 1997 the production line was still being shared to build the last 993s and the first Boxsters until spring 1998.
