Might have been the OPC then - I had it in for a replacement windscreen back in Feb / March and they did a free car check for me with a condition report.

I was actually checking on a previous oil leak which was occuring on the left side cylinder head but appears to have dried up now (possibly because I've changed to a more suitable grade oil - 5w40 shell helix ultra).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Folks! Been absent for awhile but thought I would poke my head in as I was changing the brake fluid earlier this week and whilst doing so I noticed some greyish white chalky deposit all over the left side cylinder head... from my initial google search results I understand this could be caused by a coolant leak however I haven't had to top-up the coolant from a very long time and the level appears to be bang on the mark in the coolant reservoir. I was actually checking on a previous oil leak which was occuring on the left side cylinder head but appears to have dried up now (possibly because I've changed to a more suitable grade oil - 5w40 shell helix ultra). So initially I was concerned as I thought it could of been the product of burning or combustion... Has anyone else had a similar occurence and can offer any insight?

POST 2Original post

That looks very much like leak detector spray .. it's all over the coil so obviously it has been sprayed on . we use it to locate hard to find oil leaks with rear mains being the main culprit . Coolant leaks tend to have a pinkish tone to them and are more chalky .

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi deMort - hope you are well mate  Hmmm got me thinking now - maybe it does have a slight pinkish tinge to it (I'm colour blind which doesn't help) :floor: It defnitely wasn't there before the car's MOT earlier this year, could the MOT tester have done this? Didn't go to my usual MOT place but this wasn't the only issue I had at the last place (if it was them) Any good way to remove it?

POST 4Original post

Can you supply a link to a product - I have a gearbox leak on a different make of car that might be the speedo seal or output shaft seal or aluminium porosity

POST 5Original post

Young man .. it's always a pleasure to chat . Image below and i've marked areas .. that is over spray in a sense or leak detector spray ... i've not used it since i left OPC so 5 years but that's what it looks like to me .. either way someone has sprayed something over the coil . A coolant leak .. if pink then antifreeze has a very chalking pink look to it .. you also have to consider .. what's in that area that could be leaking to cause this ? Pink antifreeze .. it has a sealant property to it .. kinda like we used rad seal or eggs in a coolant system to stop a leak .. it will in a sense coagulate on a leak and stop it . If nothing coolant related in that area then it kinda rules that out . It will be obvious on a pipe though .. a build up of chalky white powder on the joint . If the car is white then a respray and its over spray .. to me though .. It looks like oil detector spray .. hence that's what i think lol . There are many different types of oil leak detector from dyes to spray on additives.. just do a search .. engine oil leak detector .. you'll soon find something you can use ... chalk dust after cleaning the outside of a component will also help you .. talc powder if your not near the south coast where we have plenty of chalk lol .
