Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There are also considerations such as the ambient temperature, and I assume both readings were taken with a cold engine (obviously not running - 987.2 readings are done with the engine running..)?

day and it’s spot on the top block… also per the manual it’s normal for these to burn up to a quart around 1k miles… mine doesn’t, it actually doesn’t seem to use any, but my old 996tt was a gobbler.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Morning All,
I have attached a picture of my 987 oil levels. Do you think the oil consumption looks normal to you? I think it’s about right, but your opinions would be most welcome.
The manual tells you what each bar represents (at least mine does). On my 2010, each bar is 0.42 quarts (0.4L). That's what you have appeared to drop.
First question is, did you measure both in the same place? Even slight angle tilts can cause the reading to vary. Did you measure both after the same overall drives? That can affect level too. How many miles between those dates? Are they both taken at about the same temps? Like any fluid, oil expands and contracts depending on temperature, which can also lead to different levels.
Overall, I'd say that doesn't seem too bad of a difference, but it's hard to tell without the other info.
The levels were taken in the same place and I do roughly the same amount of miles every month as I only really use the 987 to go to the gym daily. Those daily trips are about 6 miles in total. I think it’s about right, but your opinion is most welcome.
Mileage way more important than time. So sounds like 6/day x 90 or 500 miles? Half a quart in 500 miles is not good. But that gauge could have been just high enough to read the third bar and burning only one tenth of a quart could have dropped it to the
next
level. Gauge isn’t granular enough to really measure a half quart of usage, i will add that my 2.7
987.1
gauge never budged from top level during the time I’ve owned it (about 4K miles).
As
@DDDinMN
says - the granularity of the gauge reading makes worrying about that sort of change really not useful. There are also considerations such as the ambient temperature, and I assume both readings were taken with a cold engine (obviously not running - 987.2 readings are done with the engine running..)?
Remember, the gauge can drop by one bar from one day to the
next
. So try adding just a small amount and it will probably push the reading to the
next
level. One bar down is a good place to keep it.
How long does the car sit before you check it?? This is important because mine can sit over night and it’s on down one “block” and I go back later the
next
day and it’s spot on the top block… also per the manual it’s normal for these to burn up to a quart around 1k miles… mine doesn’t, it actually doesn’t seem to use any, but my old 996tt was a gobbler. This oil consumption can sometimes be overwhelming and your first thought “blow by” … but sadly it’s pretty common and it’s really driver style dependent.
It is my experience that the oil level display is crude and imprecise. Never trust just one reading. Sometimes I think what you are seeing are oil levels from yesterday. Mine can go up a notch or down a notch from day to day and then go back. Chasing the perfect oil level can drive you insane. The only practical thing you can do is check it at the start of your day and add a splash of oil if it gets down to 1 bar and try to keep the level between 2 and 3 bars.
Same here! I moved my car 2 days ago and it read one block down… checked this AM and right on the money…. It’s a stupid way to do it… although a dip stick probably wouldn’t be accurate right away either… for me it’s the lack of a visual
On a 9A1 with 4 scavenger pickups in the sump and about 2 gallons of oil, I don't feel compelled to keep it "topped". Long ago, on my first oil change, I overfilled it. So now I'm happy to keep it down a bar or two. I my 95K miles, I've never had to add oil between changes (which is 5-7K mi or 1/year - whichever comes 1st). The old girl went from a daily driver to a garage queen since I retired, so she doesn't get to stretch her legs much anymore. Plus moved from Florida to a region with 4 seasons.
She still gets compliments - last week I needed a state safety inspection and the tech (local garage) was drooling like he thought it was some kinda exotic. I almost told him his newer SUV is probably worth more.
I don't trust the digital oil meter. always check it in the same spot in my garage in the a.m. and get different results from one day to the
next
. for example, I changed the oil a few weeks ago, and the
next
day check the level and it was slightly below half. went to a track event that day. came home, and it was full. so what the hell is it, half or full? dumbass digital meter... a simple dipstick would have worked better than this POS sensor. sorry, aside from this rant I have nothing to offer. except that I am thinking about installing a proper oil pressure gauge myself.
I usually check mine every other day after it warms up on the move. I keep it at one bar below and change the oil every 3-4K miles. I also let the car drain overnight and end up putting 8qts to return it to one bar below. I can't tell if I'm burning any because it isn't in there that long. Oil is cheap compared to any engine. I do agree with most that just having a dipstick would eliminate all the questions, concerns and posts regarding the foolishness of not having such a simple manual foolproof device for those of use that need the visual and odorous check that makes us confident we are good to go. Engines do burn oil. I've gotten used to mine and have had no problems once you understand that the reading is yesterdays!
I would have to agree with that assessment. I also changed the oil more often than not. I haven't tried letting it drain all night before though, that might be a good idea. when I let it sit for an hour or two to drain, there's literally nothing else dripping after 2 hours so that's probably all that's going to come out at that point.
I'm getting ready to jack it up and do the plugs and coils and a few more things so I'll drain the oil do a new fresh measurement. I also want to put the steak camera up to take a look at the cylinder walls
