It's no longer Top-Tier rated - the claim made by BP is it uses a different FI cleaner that is superior to the additives they used when it was rated Top-Tier.

Suggestion
Specifically, that clean fuel injectors provide an optimal spray pattern for combustion so fuel doesn’t end up on cylinder walls which then washes away the oil’s lubricity and leads to bore scoring.

this causes gouges in the cylinder walls, it’s not the only motors that do this… many manufacturers have issues like this… most motors don’t cost 30k to replace tho so we hear about this more.

That leads me to question exactly what the additives are, and if there is a restricted list of what's acceptable, OR is the rating done by actual testing of the gasoline in an engine to see if it keeps the injectors, fuel-system and valves clean.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just watched Episode 3, as it's important stuff to know. Although I'm on a
987.2
(base 2.9L), it's a good idea to be informed. Going to likely do a Blackstone oil analysis shortly on my 255.5K mile 9A1 engine; curious (and a bit nervous) as to what I might find.
Yes, bore scoring is real. Made new friends with a P-car mechanic recently, and he had an '08
Cayman
(I think an S) and had to sell the car because of the bore scoring.
BTW, Vu is just amazing and is as personable as he appears on screen. I had a great time interviewing him last October in Newport, RI and hope to meet up with him again soon.
255K on a 9A1? That's pretty amazing for a high revving performance engine. I would expect it from a low revving, lumbering Toyota Camry motor, but in Porsche sports car, that's pretty unheard of. Even Honda high revving sporty engines tend not to last that long before a head gasket, valve seal, cam, or some major bearing fails.

Yes - I was just talking about this; I'm definitely in uncharted waters here. Fingers crossed there isn't something lurking. However, the fact that it was regularly serviced at a dealership during 242K of those miles -- makes me think at the engine itself was reasonably well taken care of. Meanwhile a new friend of mine who's a P-car master tech listened to the car recently, and thinks it sounds just fine. On the VAL report from the PIWIS 2, there were zero overrevs in the high brackets -- so clearly this car was well taken care of (at least the engine appears to have been well taken care of).
Are any of you aware of the oils and additives they talked about in episode 3? Driven di40 is the moly heavy oil they recommend I believe, then the PEA fuel additive is found in Chevron Techron Concentrate plus I believe.
Liqui-Moly Cera TEC motor oil additive for protecting the (primarily) aluminum cylinder bores.
I wish they listed all the preventative type products they recommended!
I watched episode 3 and have seen other videos regarding engine oils and fuels. One minor complaint I have about this video is that these guys only talk about the Driven oils because of the
LN Engineering
connection. I would be interested in the pluses and minuses of other oils like Liqui Moly, Redline and Motul to name a few. Driven can’t be the only oil that is good for our Porsches.
Leaving that minor comment aside, I’ve found the importance of quality fuels and periodic use of additives to be quite informative. Specifically, that clean fuel injectors provide an optimal spray pattern for combustion so fuel doesn’t end up on cylinder walls which then washes away the oil’s lubricity and leads to bore scoring.
The part about the study showing an exponential difference between the cleanliness of injectors run on low grade fuel versus a Top Tier fuel was very interesting and makes sense. I’ve always sought Top Tier fuel for my
Porsche
, but will now be doing it for all my cars. Unfortunately, the most convenient gas station to me is not Top Tier.
I agree, I want to know all the fuel additives and oils that are best. That said, I bought some of that Driven gas treatment online.
The top tier fuel stuff was also fascinating. I have several near my house and I will now be going to those exclusively.

Top Tier Gas Locater
@mainsoda
. Here is a link to the Tech Tactics that Lake Speed did on fuels. Was VERY informative with lots of details about things like octane, ethanol and fuel additives.
it’s a bit long, but keeps you interested. For those who want the main two points.
1) Always use a Top Tier fuel. Top Tier does not refer to the octane rating or premium vs regular. It is about the additives and detergents that a supplier adds to the base stock of fuel. You can Google Top Tier fuel to get a list of companies. But basically it’s the name brand companies like Shell, Exxon, BP, Chevron, etc. Most cheaper convenient store fuel is not TopTier.
2). Periodically, like with each oil change, run a fuel additive through the gas. The additive should contain PEA. The Driven additive contains this as does the Chevron one. But many popular or less expensive fuel additives do not contain PEA. And there are brands which include it in some products but not others.

Interesting about Top-Tier gases. I've used Amoco for about 6 decades. It's now BP/Amoco in my area, and I've continued using it. It's no longer Top-Tier rated - the claim made by BP is it uses a different FI cleaner that is superior to the additives they used when it was rated Top-Tier. That leads me to question exactly what the additives are, and if there is a restricted list of what's acceptable, OR is the rating done by actual testing of the gasoline in an engine to see if it keeps the injectors, fuel-system and valves clean.
And just relying on Top-Tier isn't foolproof. Earlier this week there was a warning in our community FB page about getting fuel from one Philips-66 station in town, that multiple cars had stalled and couldn't be restarted within a block or so of getting fuel there. The Philips-66 station (and fuel) is rated as "Top-Tier"..
I remember about 25+ years ago when I was in Ohio, I think when I was still driving my Saab 9000 Turbo, that someone recommended that I avoid BP gasoline. I think it was a mechanic, who said they saw a lot of dirty engines from people who used BP...
That would be right around (1998) when BP and Amoco merged and BP took over the Amoco refineries. Before that their US fuel came from abroad. For decades Amoco was the only un-leaded fuel in the US. I used it with no fuel related issues at all.
I watched all four parts of the video series the same day my newsletter featuring them came in the mail. Super interesting to me, and I plan to go back and re-watch when I find the time. I too was surprised to learn about Top Tier fuels and pleased that a couple of stations (both different brands) near me carry them. I plan to run some Seafoam through my fuel system before starting to buy the Top Tier fuel, though, just to try to have clean injectors before embarking on "the good stuff." I had the same question about Driven oil products as recommended by
LN Engineering
after recently having Liqui Moly recommended by Flat Six Innovations. Also surprised that not all Liqui Moly products have moly in them, and that moly is such a great additive for protective cylinders in our
Porsche
engines. I think the video said the makers don't list the components of their products, including moly, because they are considered trade secrets. So I'm back to depending on the word of these folks who know a lot more about these engines than I ever will.
Just to add, after researching a bit more about fuel additives, that Seafoam doesn't contain PEAs so it is arguably not as effective as some other options that do. Think I'll go with one that does.
idk, the link between fuel quality, additives, and bore scoring is sketchy. The simplest explanation is oil, not fuel. the surface of the cylinder bore is not chemically reactive. I think some people imagine bare aluminum... isn't the coating treated with with like million degree plasma?
Nikasil wears off, doesn’t last, etc.. this causes gouges in the cylinder walls, it’s not the only motors that do this… many manufacturers have issues like this… most motors don’t cost 30k to replace tho so we hear about this more. It doesn’t happen to all flat six motors, but happens enough…
