Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It worked for mine - brought up my car (Boxster, base) had selections for 17" 18" and 19" - rather limited in the 18" size (Bridgestone and Michelin - and Michelin only as summer or winter tires..

POST 1Original post

As I was on Costco's tire website (as I was scheduling a appointment for another car), I quickly checked whether their look up by license plate really works (and it does for mine). The query resulted in 2 cars (e.g., the plate / number was assigned to another car / owner in the past, which is not at all unusual), HOWEVER, "the other, older" car - as I got this license plate about a month ago - is 2005 Carrera GT, and I was speechless . I started wondering whether license plates / numbers are issues with some kind of groupings / logics (e.g., Convertible is a type of a car you need to designate in NJ, at least). My thoughts are: 1. Yes, some kind of high level (by car type) groupings exist (more likely) 2. Completely random and this is probably 0.000001% coincidence 3. Or NJ MVC's (aka DMV) system is "messed" up (data-wise) and "somehow" the VIN designates two different cars (Boxster / Carrera GT) - also likely as I work with IT / data, and something like this happens all the time in the corp world.

POST 2Original post

Plate numbers aren't reused in NJ - once assigned - you can transfer it between cars the plate holder owns - but motor vehicles will not reuse a plate number (you can imagine the problems that could cause..) What's the link to the Costco tire plate lookup? I'll see what it does with mine..

POST 3Original post

https://tires.costco.com/ Start search for tires for your car. One tab is for lookup by license plate. Enter your license plate & state & zip. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for my state (N.C). It just brings up a map of local Costco tire centers.

It worked for mine - brought up my car (Boxster, base) had selections for 17" 18" and 19" - rather limited in the 18" size (Bridgestone and Michelin - and Michelin only as summer or winter tires.. No Continentals - who make an all-season that's quite good.)

POST 5Original post

I would imagine once you turn in your plate (which I have done a few times in my life time), the number maybe reused? I actually turned in this plate associated with that Carrera GT, as I just received a personalized license plate Since I literally received the new plate last week, this "new" number does not show up on Costco or on the "public records" As RSchwerer indicated, you can look up by license plate number (for certain states, I guess, as our two other cars do show up with just one record each).
