Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I did the same on mine when I had a misfire, I swapped plugs and coil pack to find out it was a faulty coil pack.
Leading evidence: 'Replace plugs and coil pack' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Is there a technique for replacing the coil pack on cylinder 4 or is it just plain difficult!

You are better off replacing the old ones with the new ones and keeping the old ones as

Went to move the car to fit new coil packs and it started on 6 cylinders and continued to run on 6 as smoothly as it always has done.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Today,I backed my '01, 3.4 Carrera2 out of the garage and while it was idling I noticed a tick like a noisy tappet. After a short time the engine dropped on to 5 cylinders. The cylinder nearest the rear on the offside was the one not firing and my OBD reader reported "Cylinder 4 misfire".
The car has 81k miles and had a new IMS bearing, flywheel and clutch less than 4k miles ago. It uses no oil and there is no smoke from the exhaust. Neither tailpipe has any black deposits. Coil pack? plug? or something much more serious? :eh!:
Can you get under it to check the coils? Cracked coils are pretty common. I'd certainly be suspecting that over anything more sinister given it's just 1 cylinder that's affected.
Went to move the car to fit new coil packs and it started on 6 cylinders and continued to run on 6 as smoothly as it always has done. The check engine light self extinguished also. I now have 6 new coil packs as spares!!! :dont know:
Could have been damp when you started it and arcing out hence the ticking sound!!! Probably dried out now and less prone to arcing. Either way sounds like a coil pack.
Is there a technique for replacing the coil pack on cylinder 4 or is it just plain difficult! eg is it necessary to remove the silencer on the offside?
When I replaced my coil packs and spark plugs and tubes I took off the bumper and exhausts.
People say it can be done without doing so but in my experience of car mechanics you're better off getting everything you can out of the way especially if it's your first time doing a job.
