I have a shortened 5 digit plate so cut out 2inches or so from the middle of the standard plinth and used a soldering iron to weld back together 💁"â™‚️

After getting the front bumper on my aerokit car resprayed earlier in the year, and having my bodywork guy fill in the mounting holes for the front plinth, I ordered a stick on plate and expected to just run with that moving forward.

I know could use adhesive/velcro/something else to mount the plate directly to the bumper without drilling holes, but I'll have some of the same problems - plate will be pointing down/will have weird curves in it to match bumper profile.

Suggestion

- with my (new) shorter plate I'm planning on mounting the plinth to the car, then the plate separately to the plinth using the outer most holes on the plinth itself - I'll have to stick something behind the plinth to screw into (or come up with another solution), but this will place the screw heads in the centre line of the number plate within an inch of the edges, whilst giving an even overhang of the plate to the plinth along the top and sides, with the plate then hanging down lower off the plinth...

Should be able to use VHB on the 3D printed material and it would be a really simple way of mounting the plate right but getting rid of the plinth.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Plenty of threads on this in the past but haven't quite found the answer I'm after. After getting the front bumper on my aerokit car resprayed earlier in the year, and having my bodywork guy fill in the mounting holes for the front plinth, I ordered a stick on plate and expected to just run with that moving forward. The big issue is that I think the stick on plate looks a bit crap. I spent AGES playing with the positioning but there's so many curves going on that although it looks ok from the front, from the side it looks pretty weird as the plate both points down to the ground a bit and it curves up the sides of the bumper. It's driving my OCD mad! Think I'm going to go back to a proper plastic plate, but debating my options for mounting it and I'm really, really keen to avoid having to drill into the fresh paint on the front bumper to permanently mount something. I know could use adhesive/velcro/something else to mount the plate directly to the bumper without drilling holes, but I'll have some of the same problems - plate will be pointing down/will have weird curves in it to match bumper profile. Obviously the normal Porsche plinth solves this as it neatly matches the curves of the bumper and lets the plate sit nice and' square' to the front of the car, but it also normally needs mounting with hardware that goes through the bumper and can't easily be mounted with said adhesives/velcro direct to the car. I saw some guy in the US do some clever stuff with T nuts and the plate plinth on a 981 Boxster (link here for reference: https://www.planet-9.com/threads/the-dreaded-front-license-plate.233953/ ) but don't think that will work with all the curves going on with a 996.1 bumper. Anyone got any bright ideas to get the new plastic plate mounted nice and square, either with the plinth or not, without getting the DeWalt out?

POST 3Original post

I've opted for factory plinth with a ~2" shorter, standard height road legal plate i.e. the plinth looks the "proper" front mounting option, but the 966.1 plinth is 2" shorter than a standard plate for some reason, causing the ends to "boomerang" back outwards... - works for me as I have a 5 digit/character length reg... and I've then fitted the same length plate on the rear for my own OCD(!) The rear plate is easily applied with tape which gives a much smoother appearance, especially when top lit I resigned myself to the standard sticking out screwcap covers and holes in the front bumper - the fact holes pass through the bumper don't bother me in the slightest (they are always covered!) and a front bumper is always going to be in the firing line of every stone and bug, but I would still like a smoother mounting hardware through the plate - cant stand the knobbly screw caps, but nothing on earth will appear to stick the plate to that factory plinth!!!

POST 4Original post

997 short number plate plinth, a little easy remodelling on the back edge with a file and mounted at the bottom of my aero bumper (it's actually a Boxster aero2 bumper) Ran no plate for a while, stopped twice by traffic and I thought better of the hassle! The fixings are small and low down so easily removed. Just my take on something a bit different

POST 5Original post

I always thought this looked good enough on my old car? :dont know:

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have seen those before. Great idea for a GoPro but not so sold on a big UK plate flapping about near the corner of the bumper! Thanks for the options but it's just not quite OEM enough for me. Can't deal with the plate looking like it's about to fall off the front of the car with the stick on one. Stick on ones look great on later cars, but the profile of the bumper on a 996.1 just doesn't make it look quite right to my eyes. Also slowly resigning myself to fitting the plinth permanently, but also going for the smallest legal plate I can to try and reduce the overhang either side of the plinth. I've got a 7 digit plate which means that legally I can go to around 460mm in plate width. That's a lot less overhang than the 520mm standard plate. Re: attaching it to the plinth. I was going to experiment with VHB or dual lock tape. Have you had no joy at all with anything other than screws?

POST 7Original post

I have a shortened 5 digit plate so cut out 2inches or so from the middle of the standard plinth and used a soldering iron to weld back together 💁"â™‚️

POST 8Original post

I kept my plinth but moved it down to fix to the blank panel underneath the nose using a couple bent brackets. Obviously this wouldn't work if you had the 3rd (central) radiator

POST 9Original post

Mine has a stick-on front reg plate directly onto the original plinth. The size is 17" x 3".

POST 10Original post

I think the stick on plate is much better - cleaner looking. My bumper would need a respray to fit one though.

POST 11Original post

It's the texture of the face of the plinth that prevents it...... maybe if it was sanded/ground down smooth that might be enough?! - hopefully this is enough to satisfy my personal OCD...... should mean the curve of the plate better follows the plinth and no screws through any of the letters of the licence plate, just the blank ends...

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sounds like we share similar levels of OCD! Had some fixtures and fittings arrive over the weekend to try and see if I could find something workable. Nothing is quite right. Current plan with a friend is to to see if we can 3D print some curved brackets that will affix directly to the plate on one side and then match the curve of the bumper on the other. Should be able to use VHB on the 3D printed material and it would be a really simple way of mounting the plate right but getting rid of the plinth.
