I run the Hankook V12's on my 996 daily driver and am very happy with them.

I'm running nearly 40psi in them now to get the same direct feel I had with the Bridgestone's I previously had on the car.

I ran the Sumis at 44psi at the rear on my Turbo and ended up overinflating them (= the tread was visibly more worn in the center then on the sides): by 9000 miles or so I had to toss them.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So what's the consensus these days? I am going to finally get rid of the P zeros
Noise level is a big thing for me, any difference between the two?
choices, choices
I think that it depends on how you use your car. Mine is a daily driver, seeing about 1000 miles a month. I bought a new set of Hankooks last year along with a new set of wheels. The OEM wheels have Michelin Pilot PS2s in decent shape that I will save for DE use. After 10,000 miles, the rears are shot and are so loud that it sounds like I'm riding inside of an Abrams M1 tank. I ordered new tires today and the Sumitomos were on my short list due to the price, good reviews on Tire Rack, and the price. I was actually more interested in treadlife than ultimate performance, so my focus went to the Continental Extreme Contact DWS, which I have used on two other vehicles including my wife's Cayenne S, and have gotten 50,000 miles out of the previous sets. What I ended up ordering though was a set of the new Yokohama 'W' rated ENVigors. They are a new design with a treadwear rating like the Contis, but were $70 a set cheaper. The early reviews of them are great, but we'll see. $681 for the set of 4 shipped from Tire Rack, and that's for 275/35/18s on the back.
Same situtation: I have PS2s on the car and would love to replace them, but at $1450 a set of 4 is way too expensive. I am leaning towards the Sumis but the Kooks look good too. I am most concerned about noise and quality ride. However the one thing about PS2s is that that they have the two sizes that I want for my C4S, the 305s rear, and the 235/240s front, wherease both Sumis and Kooks are limited in sizes.
I had to make the same decision recently and it boiled down to the sumis being avail for next day delivery and hankooks some weeks away. So far the sumis are great.
Well, I am about to pull trigger and after doing a lot of reading and speaking with local freinds I am going Hankook V12's. The only question was size and i am convinced that 235/40 18 front / 295/30 18 rear are in my near future. So in a few weeks i'll post some first hand reviews.
I ordered the Sumitomos today at Discount Tire, will get them with installation and everything for $830.00 (225 front and 285 rear). At the moment I have Goodyear Eagle and they are way too loud. I made around 15k Mls on the rear tires.

I paid just over $600 for a set of Sumis for my 996TT, and $80 to have them balanced and installed. That's less than 1/2 the price of PS2s - and I know I can't tell the $800 difference.
My PZero's were shot in the rear and I still can go another 10K on the fronts. I got Sumi's installed on the rear for $320 including tax.
Man what a huge difference, I think they are a way better tire to the Pirelli's and handle equally as good with ZERO noise.
I'm buying them for the front as soon as they get a little louder up there.
My advice, GET 'EM.
My .02 for what it's worth.
I've had The Sumi's on my Audi for about 12,000 miles now. They're still quiet, still round, showing great wear characteristics and have decent stick both wet and dry. They're not the stickiest tire I've ever driven but very well balanced for a daily. For a sedan they're a perfect performance tire, for a sports car they might be lacking a bit of total grip over some of the competitors but again are prooving to wear very well.
I recently put the V12's on my M3. Coming from Bridgestone S03's I can tell you the kook's stick just as good, but have a much softer sidewall that leaves me desiring more feel from the tire. I'm running nearly 40psi in them now to get the same direct feel I had with the Bridgestone's I previously had on the car. Other than that I really have no complaints. Only have about 1000 miles on them though so not a TON of time but for the money they seem like a bargain if they continue to impress from a stick perspective. I don't drive that car in the rain so I'll never be able to report on wet performance.

Can't comment about Hankooks, but the Sumis on the rear of my 911 are quiet, good in the rain and perform better than I expected for the price. I will buy them again when they wear out. However, I have not tracked with them, so that's another usage I can't compare.
I had a set of Hankook Ventus tires on the Cayenne, and I won't buy them again. I know it's hard to compare with the 996, but I found the Hankooks to be loud and the treadwear was average. I replaced them with Continentals, and I would consider the same thing for the 996 when the Sumis wear out.
Overall, I've been pretty happy with the Sumis at roughly 12K miles.
HTR Z III's are the number one tire I sell for Porsche, and have been for months. I'm still a fan of them over the Hankooks. The only reason I would buy the Hankooks first is if I saw a lot of rainy driving.
In dry conditions, the Sumis are just better.
Lots of discussion here if you do a search. Please call me if I can help.
I have good luck with the Sumi's on DE days. After few events the tires get a little greasy.....buts that because you are really pushing hard. I can't justify the high $$$ tires. Next step is a dedicated track set.
ahh, the fruit of my Sumi acquiring labors
Damon@TireRack, you guys have a great shop and I have purchased tires from you before but it is such a miserable job getting anybody to mount them up around here, everybody bitches and gripes and won't stand behind their work. Actually, the shop that butchered my wheel is one of your recommended installers.(Not your fault obviously)
When I started looking for replacement tires the first place I went was TireRack.com, hoping you had finally opened an install shop at your Reno warehouse. I wish you would, I would buy every tire from you. Compare an enjoyable two hour trip over the mountain to some good guys, or like my latest wheel fiasco, days and weeks of unnecessary hassle and heartache.
I think a Reno install shop would be a huge winner for you guys and hope you do it.
This thread on the 993 board, started just after Sumitomo introduced the tire, has a wealth of discussion related to track performance. Very positive overall.

Question for TireRack guy:
Why is it that TireRack has gone all politically correct and will not even quote a tires size larger than what OEM says is approved? I have bought tires from you guys since forever and I still remember the +1 and +2 campaigns what happened?
My last car had I listened to you I would have been stuck with 205's all the way around when 245's fit just dandy. I just went back and forth with tires for the 996 and each rep I spoke to and or emailed REFUSED to deviate from the OEM is god routine.
Rant over... and NO I did not listen to any of those guys I listen to the guys on here on sizing
Damon from TireRack is great. I purchased my Sumi's from him and I will go back for ALL of my tire purchases.
Quick question........
How many miles are you getting out of your Sumi's? I have about 10k miles on my F&R. Should I run the tires down to the wear bars?
For those of you with the Sumi's, what PSI are you running in your tires?
That's not being politically incorrect, that's covering their *** so they don't get sued by someone doing something dumb. If you know what model and size of tires you want, just order them up and ignore the feature that tells you what fits on the car.
Agreed, on the online portion. But to stick to it even on the phone? I mean come on a simple question as "in your experience with other customers" will size X fit my car deserves more than toting the politically correct answer. They are supposed to be the tire experts and have data from years in business. That is why you call them isn't it?
All I am saying is they didn't used too be that way... I can call Porsche NA if i wanted the politically correct answer. Any way, ordering the libelous politically incorrect 235/40/18's & 295/30/18's Hankook V12's tomorrow
I ran the Sumis at 44psi at the rear on my Turbo and ended up overinflating them (= the tread was visibly more worn in the center then on the sides): by 9000 miles or so I had to toss them. I also suspect that keeping them at 44psi was what caused them to develop out-of-round characteristics, as if some of the belts in the carcass of the tires had slipped or similar (wonka-wonka-wonka). Note that I had an alignment done immediately before the set of Sumis was installed. I am now keeping the replacement rears at ~40psi but ready to drop some pressure at the first sign of overinflation.
Conversely, 36psi at the front hasn’t given me any trouble at all.
What's this "we" air boy?
I installed a set of 225/285 Hankooks in the spring and have been daily driving the he!! out of them since then. I run tire pressures around 38/42.
Price wise they are great, and so far treadwear has been acceptable (sorry no acces to records for actual mileage). I find them very comfortable on the street, that is to say they are soft and compliant, squishy is how I would describe them.
Grip wise they are only ok...I'm in the PSM a fair bit. I chalk this up to the tyres allowing the car to "slew" over and overcome the grip of the tread. In the wet they are ok. It rains here a lot and so far I've kept the shiny side up. I'm old enough to slow down in the rain I guess.
I hear them compaining in corners, not howling but maybe more grinding. On the road I don't hear them, but my hearing isn't the greatest and I usually operate with my windows and/or sunroof open so I get lots of wind noise (yes even in the rain).
For the street the Hankooks are really good, because they are so soft. They are not a multipurpose tire though. I keep a set of track wheels and tyres for autocross etc. There's no way I would drive the kooks on the track. It just wouldn't be any fun.
I will try a set of the Sumis next, or the Yokohamas mentioned earlier, but I will go through a second set of Hankooks on the rear first.
Just bought a set of Sumis and found them to be much quieter than the Continental's they replaced. My son also put Sumis on his 993 and is very pleased.
I've had Sumi's for a good year plus and noticed a much quieter ride around town. Good quality, especially for the price, but for my needs (no track) these are just plain good tires to use and will order another set when needed.
anyone needs a pair of 225/45R 17's I just listed some beautiful Bridgestone Potenza's in the FS section.
really nice, clean 85% left for $175/pair obo plus shipping
(shameless plug)
i used the sumi's on my audi TT and for the street they were good, but for autocross they slid alot. so me personally i would try something different. however i do not run them on my 996. what the heck do i have on there? (im out of town) haha
and as far as "the tire rack" i found that the local "savannah tire and auto" sold me the same tires for the same price, and i didnt have to drive 40 miles one way to pick them up!!
They have a bit of sport to them I guess... Just by looking at the thread of course.
I like the tread pattern on the Hankook's but I had to settle a bit for these.
By the sounds of things from various people which commented on either or, looks like their both pretty much even in many senses.
Next year i'll be probably buying a whole rim/tire package in 19"s. On those i'm going with a very sporty tire package.
Thanks for the pic!
I like my Hankooks so far, seems to be minimal wear after about 3k miles.
The Hankooks seem much more compliant -- kind of a bonus with a much smoother ride than I remember the Sumitomo's ever providing.
My car is really well balanced and the V12's hang in there very well on 90mph sweepers. Hope they continue to wear well!
The latest version of Evo (UK) magazine tested the Hankooks against 8 other tires. I can't remember if the Sumis were included in the test. I haven't read the article yet but I believe the V12s were #8 of 9. I have put over 5K miles on the V12s. Good wear and grip so far.
Well, had tires put on today and man what a difference new tires make. The weather sucked yet again so did I not get a chance to drive on them too far. However, just from the short drive home I can tell you they Hankooks are great street tires especially for the price. They were quite, handled the wet roads and rain really well and just made the car "feel" so much more solid and connected to the road. I'll try and snap some pictures tomorrow. BTW, I went with 235/40/18 front & 295/30/18 rear and they fit fine on the OEM 8x18 front & 8x10 rear rims.
Now, everntually I am going to have to do something abouthe the GAP! Even with my cars 030 10mm drop the gap between tires and fender is HUGE
I just put the Hankooks on my car last week, and drove to a track event with them (CMP w/the PCA). They're not suitable for track use, and will be coming off the car. However, as a street tire, even aside from the very low purchase price, they're quiet, offer lots of grip (in their temperature range), and break away predictably. They're also very comfortable. Excellent street tire, and outstanding value. I'd had the Sumitomos on track also, I feel like they offer slightly less grip overall, but they may offer slightly better feedback.
You really have to pay for good tires, anything with more grip or better feedback is going to cost (a lot) more, and often give much worse noise/ride qualities. For a summer tire, the Hankooks just may be the smoothest/quietest tire I've had on a car.
Im not a fan of the sumi's
Currently I have teh GY eagle f1's and the best tire I think I ever had.... And they were pretty cheap. the whole set came in just under a g-wiz
