oem springs were ridiculous $$$ so I had a set of Eibachs installed which REALLY lowered the car.

do check the condition of the suspension from time to time and check the condition of the struts as well as the bump stops.

Happily, unless you're being run over by me, or you're under the car when it's on a lift you can't see it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I’ve had three situations in the past 4-5 days where I’ve scraped the front underside of my ‘
06 Cayman S
pulling out of a driveway or parking lot. Nothing (tire pressure,
tires
, suspension) has changed on the car. I was moving slowly from a standing start. Not heavy but enough that the splitters are scraped underneath and the under tray. Stock suspension not
PASM
.
Two questions:
1. What should I be doing to avoid this?
2. Thoughts on the best way to refinish or should I assume this is typical and live with it?
Thanks! I tried a search to look for this info but found nothing except parts for sale. Maybe my search terms were off?

Bill,
It's unfortunately not uncommon. I did it the 2nd day I owned mine. Went over a hump and heard awful noises.. scraped up the underside. Happily, unless you're being run over by me, or you're under the car when it's on a lift you can't see it. (Answer 2) So I put it out of my mind. (Answer 1) The best avoidance for this is - if at all possible, to approach the obstacle at an angle - 45 degrees if you can. For me that always seems to work.

Ya avoid coming in straight.. (ex
the right tire hits the curb line before the left tire, this will raise the car on the right side …. I have to use 4’ long boards to get in and out.
These cars have a long front end. It’s the distance from when the very front of the lip and when the tire hits that in driveway… my Exige was way lower than either
911
and
cayman
but it’s super short distance..
every day my neighbor backs straight out with her Camry and it does the perfect suspension bounce.. WHAM!!! I’ve told her how to back out and drive in… what a waste of a conversation
this lip made the front distance even longer…
hi there..

you didn't mention if this is something new or if you faced this frequently.
do check the condition of the suspension from time to time and check the condition of the struts as well as the bump stops.
if you have never replaced them, they could be leaking or worn out, making the car sit lower than standard height.
If like my home the end of the driveway has a small gutter for subdivision drainage? They make a fill in, half pipe shaped rubber piece. Likely an HOA trigger though if you live in one and it needs removal during rain events, I ruled it out. I never ran the test because I found the solution. As others noted I exit the driveway on an angle and do it slowly. If someone has to wait longer than a Chevy? Too bad. Same with the speedbumps the SE loves, if I hold you up, I'm sorry, too bad. In regard to the suspension, checking it is good practice however my car backed out straight and too quickly could scrape when it had five thousand miles on it.
This seemed to be new but may have just been related to the fact that I’ve been driving more.
Just had our local specialist shop do a thorough spring checkup on the car. The suspension is in good shape. The car only has 41,000 miles.
I think most of us have done this at least once. I purchased this SlipLo product through
Amazon
but haven't installed them yet as I will be removing the front bumper to install Rensport grill screens over the
next
couple of weeks

I wish my lip had a bottom.. I’d probably get something like this then… I planned on getting a TechArt lip instead, but I’m probably going to post mine forsale anyway..
I've had three 987's and a
981
GTS
. The
981
, even thought it sat lower, had less front overhang and never scraped, but as others have mentioned, the 987 does require extra care in approaching on an angle.
The only time I get to examine the scrapes is when the car is on a lift, otherwise they can't be seen.
Bill I had the same issue with my 987 scraping when i entered my driveway. I did purchase and install the Sliplow kit and it works well. It takes the scrape and saves the bumper.
Scraped the heck out of my front clip (deep gouges under the nose) within the first month of ownership.
All you can do is take driveways at an angle, but at a certain point you will scrape.
I've already had to replace one of the black air dams in front of my right front wheel due to this.
If nothing has changed in this started happening on your driveway where it never has before, then possible your front struts or springs are wearing out.
I've learned to not worry (too much) about moderate scraping. I've been daily driving since my 2008 was new. I've accidentally whomped down a few times hard enough to make me get out and inspect. So far all is OK!
I had some small scrapes from the previous owner. I used
Porsche
touch-up paint to fix them up when I had the bumper off to give the radiators and AC condensers a good cleaning. Since then, I've just been careful, like others have said, and luckily I haven't added any new scrapes.
LOL - Sorry Don guess i'm not too good on staying within the thread i'm following too! Thanks much for the info to uploading picks. It'll come in handy for future conversations.
i live with this daily, scraping the plastic piece in front of the wheel that hangs down. my issue was both left side springs physically broke at a rust spot where the spring sat on the perch.
porsche
oem springs were ridiculous $$$ so I had a set of Eibachs installed which REALLY lowered the car. If i had to do it all over again, i would have gone coilovers..........btw 07 CS with 115K miles which lives outside. as mentioned earlier sounds like something has changed............
Transition at an angle and if you're scraping the splitters, those are replaceable when they get too damaged. Otherwise it's just a feature that looks like a bug. And thinking about it, these cars aren't really that low.
There not that low at all… my NSX, Exige and MR2 were way lower… it’s the length of the front end that hits the in-drive/curb (whatever) before the tire hits the in-drive to raise it up…. And the 997/987 has got a pointed bumper as well.. which doesn’t help
