Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I had 7.5" and 9" and ran 235/45 and 265/40 (Boxster fitment).
Leading evidence: 'Run 235/45 and 265/40 (boxster fitment)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rd as wheel size and profile' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I am using the 7 and 9 now for the winter months with all-season tires mounted on them and will put the 18" wheels back on with summer sport tires when Spring comes.

Rubber does change RD as wheel size and profile change.

i've run low-pro 19s all day in seattle for many, many years and have never run into any issues - let it be known that i do spend around $1k per wheel to get the very best, but regardless...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This worked great for me until they repaved a crappy freeway that I commute on a couple of years ago.
It is starting to look like my commute is detrimental to keeping my fragile factory 18" wheels round. I'm going to see if they can be repaired, but regardless I am thinking of downgrading to 17" for daily driving. Cheaper, more tire choices, taller side tire for a more protected rim... The one caveat there, and I don't understand why that is, is the tire width. My current 18s take 225/285 tires on 8 and 10 wheels respectively, the 17" appear to be 7and 9s only, resulting in 205/255 tires!!! Which is the same size tires as my 1969 912 for pete's sake ;-) (Ok, front only)
The 17" wheel diameter should not cause the wheel witdh to be smaller, should it ? Are there Porsche 17" in 8 and 10 sizes ? I'd like to keep the rubber surface I have now, just with a slightly taller profile.. Possible ? Deluded ?
You do NOT need to go aftermarket. PAG makes 17" factory wheels for your car and you can get them cheap as take offs all over the place. Just make sure you get the correct size since there are Boxter wheels out there in 17".
You want the following:
Front
7" et55with 205/50/17
Rear
8.5" et50 or 9" et55 with 255/40/17
The tires are important to keep the RD (rolling diameter) with acceptable tolerance.
Dell, I only meant the aftermarket piece so he could get the width he was looking. With proper barrels and correct offsets (plus tire diameter based on brand and model) he could get closer to his desire than anything else (including PAG).
Happy "Blue" Holidays!
Ah, now I understand what you were saying. DAMN! What in the blue hell was I thinking?
To answer his question: NO, you cannot get the factory 17" wheels in those sizes (8" and 10"). Also, you cannot use the same size rubber from your 18" on your 17". Rubber does change RD as wheel size and profile change.
I noticed, and I laughed so hard I spit my drink on my keyboard. I think Dell should buy me a new one!!
This is clearly a new "Phenomenon" and I think we need a term to descibe it. How about "Dellbluehellselfinflictus"? What do you think?
A 225 45-17 tire would have about the same tire height as a 205 50-17. It would be 101.25mm vs 102.5mm. So if there was an aftermarket wheel in 17" by 8" for the 225 tire, it seems to me that Greg D. would be in business. I'm just going by the math, I don't know what wheels will fit the 996.
8.5" x 17" Turbo Twists are out there and make a nice choice for the front, paired with 9x17" in the rear. Lots of Boxster owners make this change for track work.
I bought a set of 6 17" wheels for $400, 2 each in 7, 8.5, and 9" widths. They are cosmetically rough (were used as track wheels) but the price was right. I am using the 7 and 9 now for the winter months with all-season tires mounted on them and will put the 18" wheels back on with summer sport tires when Spring comes. I'll probably end up selling the 8.5 wheels as I like the narrow width of the 7" for their intended purpose in the winter.
are the roads THAT bad in tampa? i don't remember it being so miserable in those parts.
i've run low-pro 19s all day in seattle for many, many years and have never run into any issues - let it be known that i do spend around $1k per wheel to get the very best, but regardless... 18s with a lot of tire to 17s with even more? they look horrible
here's a sampling:
It's a bit more of supply and demand. Tire manufacturers make tires largely for OEM fitments. A 285/40R17 is just not a popular size, for example, while 255/40R17 is hugely popular to feed Porsche rear tire habits. 235s and 245s are very popular on sport sedans, though.
If you get 7x17 and 9x17, you can get 225/45 and 275/40 no problem. 275/40 is a reasonably popular size with a good selection. I had 7.5" and 9" and ran 235/45 and 265/40 (Boxster fitment). In addition, you'll pick up another tiny bit of sidewall. This worked great for me until they repaved a crappy freeway that I commute on a couple of years ago.
