Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi gents, I usually don't post in 996 that much but I have a question: how long, roughly, would it take a skilled mechanic to change the rear crankshaft oil seal in a 996 3.4 C2? What big jobs are involved in this process? Assume full use of all usual workshop/garage facilities and tools. Cheers!

POST 2Original post

Tip - about 5 hours Manual - 4 hours Richard H would be the best to ask

POST 3Original post

The seal takes five minutes. The clutch change, gearbox in and out takes the time.

POST 4Original post

You need a special tool to insert the seals fully worth checking to see if its been done at an OPC in the last 2 years as you have a 2 year warranty on parts, so if its been done and needs doing again you might get it done for free

POST 5Original post

On a Tip you have to remove the complete engine and transmission in one, whereas on a manual you can remove the transmission by itself. Book time for a Tip is over 8 hours, and a whisker under 5 hours for a manual. Edit: Correction - on a 3.4, if you have the correct tooling, it appears that you can remove the transmission by itself. On the 3.6 with the Mercedes box, the workshop manual says to remove engine and gearbox together.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the replies. It hasnt been done before as far as anyone can see so the warrenty thing is a no-no. what is the special tool that is needed? can you point me in the direction of this item please? cheers Tim

POST 8Original post

Hi Richards spot on in that you can remove a tip gearbox on a 3.4 but we find its easier to drop the engine & gearbox in one. Are you sure it really needs doing ? Just that we've come across quite a lot of exaguration over the necessity to change a slightly weepy one. Also, be a little wary of the official repair times which are for newish cars and don't legislate for corrosion etc. and don't cover road testing etc. Grant
