But you may have notice several aesthetic differences between the two options that won't change by polishing the original tailpipe.

I suspect it is too late for me to change my order, but the mistery has been solved ;-) In Canada it is a $400+ option, and I suspect it should be possible for that money to find a local place that does as good if not better job ( provided that the KmanS compound does not do a good job ).

I will shop around and I am sure others will be changing theirs to chrome so we can compare prices.

By the way, tomorrow I plan to order the K-man to my own specs - thanks again to everyone using Cayman Club for their help and guidance, and especially to K-ManS for starting this community and making this discourse possible.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just called my Porsche parts department to order the Chrome Tailpipes and I paused when he told me that they were $586.40, compared to $385.00 or something close to that at the factory.
Also an indoor car cover with the Porsche creast was $463.11. The only thing that seemed reasonable were the sidemarkers at $28.00 each. Maybe I should look for better aftermarket prices.
Russ
Well PCA membership gets you 10% off but I concur your dealer charges a high price for parts you can shop around and find them for less on the internet.
K-man,
Yes I forgot about the 10% discount, but still seems high to me. I will shop around and I am sure others will be changing theirs to chrome so we can compare prices.
Russ
Russk,
One problem is that when you order a different exhaust from the factory, you only pay for the DIFFERENCE in cost from the standard exhaust. Order from the dealer and you have now paid for 2 exhaust tips. I can't figure why the increase in the car cover, though.
Russ, Every evening when I used to get home from work I sank into the recliner with Amy & Sofie [the wifes maltese] & watched TV! You,ve changed ourlifebecause I now rush to this darned machine to eagerly search for your latest outburst of enthusiasm; We all wait with baited breath when the great day arrives and YOUR Cayman arrives! ....be sure to get a video of it. In the meantime dont get taken by the ridiculous Porsche prices for their options.....you can order a fine Cayman cover with RUSSK emblazoned on it ....GO FOR IT.........& keep up the posts.
Rick,
I hadn't considered that I was only paying the cost increase from the factory, good point!
Xstasy,
I am glad to hear that you are enjoying the Cayman Club as much as I am! Now guess who is sitting on my lap as I type this? Meet Powder!

So RussK... on the exhaust pipes I took a very close look at the system on a car today. And can tell you the following - as a metal working artist myself.
First, it would be fairly easy to get off and it is made of stainless steel. Next, it could be polished with a metal buffing wheel, or it could be cleaned up and electro-polished (a acid/electrical solution that gives a mirror finish), or it could be Chrome Plated - but it would need to be sanded and prepped for each process, as it is too rough in it's present state.
But you may have notice several aesthetic differences between the two options that won't change by polishing the original tailpipe. The original is not round - the option is. The original is two connected quadrilateral shapes, the option is two non-connected circles. The original also has a somewhat different slant than the option. And you may have noticed the detailing inside the holes of the option is unique to it.
So actually there are several differences. The bottom line for me is that even though it wouldn't be that hard for me to polish the original exhaust, I now plan to specify the chrome plated stainless one as an option.
By the way, tomorrow I plan to order the K-man to my own specs - thanks again to everyone using Cayman Club for their help and guidance, and especially to K-ManS for starting this community and making this discourse possible.

K-Man sculpture,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very helpful! I want to keep the original shaped tailpipes, that to me is not an option. I will find out if I can get these chromed for less than the $580, if not I will just order them.
Yes Powder is a Maltese and to my wife and I he is our child! I know dog lovers and all that, but believe me I was never going to get a sissy dog. I wanted a German Shepherd, but our townhouse left me no choice, and I am now forever thankful.
Russ
Sorry, but I am a bit confused - the whole discussion weeks ago about tips suggested that the optional tips are round and don't look anything like the stock - Russ - are you suggesting that for 586.40 you get something that looks like stock, but chromed ? As I recall there was only one option code - in any case I plan to at least take the tip to some local places to see how well it can be done, or even better find a core replacement mail order to reduce wait time ( one of the sponsors does some parts on core exchange bases but they are only into painting at this point ). How about the other option - while back K-manS posted the silver polish compound he used - would that work well on the Cayman tips ?
euroboy,
Yes! The option was not available for the 'stock looking' tailpipes when I placed my order. The round ones were from Tequipment I believe not Porsche. My dealer actually had the stock chrome ones shown in his catalog. The round ones were never Porsche equipment. I do remember that there was a lot of confussion at that time and we did think that the round was what we would get if we took the chrome option, but not so!
I will probably ry to polish them first as K-Man suggested, but if they won't polish up nice I am ordering the chrome.
Russ

Has anybody compared the tips between the Cayman and the Boxter - are the stock metals the same ?
