I think we are all waiting to see what the spec of the new Gt4 will be , and hoping for some shared dna in the new spyder!!
May well be wishfull thinking, but nobody knows just yet!!
imho expect the new flat4 turbo engine!according to one article only the gt3rs and gt4 will remain flat6 n/a going forward.
also me thinks more rs60spyder than 987.2 spyder!

Sure to make the previous incarnation even more sought after than it is already!
If I didn't have a couple of nippers needing back seats then the 987.2 Spyder would be hard to resist.

Seems extremely unlikely to me.
The new fast Boxster was already spotted as a test mule with a GT4 bumper, large brakes and a ducktail-like spoiler. It seemed to be based on the 981 and not the 981.2 , so it stands to reason will also have a 6-cylinder N/A engine. Why put a new engine (with routing for the intercooler and all ancillaries!) in an old car when the facelift is just months away?
http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2016-porsche-boxs...
Other than that there's not much information about the new car. What we do know from Hatz is that it will be developed by the regular Porsche company unlike the GT4 which was developed by the Motorsport company in Weissach. We also know that it will not be called "Boxster GT4" and it will be a spiritual successor to the Spyder, but the word "Spyder" was not mentioned yet.
What was mentioned is the "Club Sport" name - in more than one article - so my best guess is that it will be a 981.1 Boxster Club Sport with the standard roof, Cayman GTS engine, bucket seats, GT4 bodykit, ducktail spoiler, same wheel design as the GT4, larger brakes, LSD and lightweight equipment positioned £4-5000 above the Boxster GTS unlike the GT4 which will be a lot more hardcore and expensive. Maybe they'll make a new rear trunk cover with two humps to make it look a bit more special but I doubt it will get a fully bespoke roof. The manual roof turned out to be too impractical and we should have seen a disguised test mule with the new roof by now. After all the old 987.2 Spyder was spotted on multiple occasions with the humps and rear roof covered up many months before its announcement.
Available as PDK or manual, maybe also unlike the GT4 which might be manual only so it won't step on its bigger brother's toes in terms of acceleration and lap times?
Just my uneducated guess - time will tell.

the boxster test mule did not have gt4 lump and some suggestions was the turbo lump and may be the facelift car and not a spyder/gt4/clubsport etc!
the boxster like the 991 is due for a facelift mid 2015 whereas the cayman 981 is not due until next year!all new engines bar gt3rs and gt4 will be turbo and according to autocar report from porsche the 911 will remain flat6 turbo and boxster/cayman flat4 turbo.whatever happens it is a given that all new 991.2 and 981.2 will be turbo to meet emissions

I don't doubt that the 981.2 cars will have turbo engines them. The blue test mule is in my opinion clearly a "send off special" 981.1 and not a 981.2 mule. A 981.1 will have the old N/A 6-cylinder engine in it.
in reply to EricE . i was told by OPC that a new roof has been engineered for the new Spyder but they didn't have any more info. I suspect that this may then permit some form of rear bodywork similar to 987. Other than that I would not disagree with your comments.

Their useful function is to look good. Plus they need to be there to support the central brake light!

Mine is not in storage. I am about to drive back from Portugal in early February. I guess I might need to put the roof on for at least the last part of the journey!!
doesn't look like there will be a spyder, Porsche seem to be posturing that we will see a Boxster club sport with a weight drop and a mild bhp bump but nowhere near the gt4s output. boxster cs won't be developed by the Motorsport team.
this probably means the cs will be without the gt4s goodie bag. I reckon the boxster cs will have a standard roof and a mild Aerokit package with a custom colour available. 918 buckets as an option?

Does make the hood a dog's breakfast though. A triumph of open form (if you like it) over closed function?
All I can say is that I'm glad I snaffled a Boxster GTS while they are still putting flat sixes into the 981.1
They can spin it any way they like, even offer more torque and HP, but a turbo four is going to sound like a Golf GTI; farty, lifeless and dull, very Volkswagen/Audi. Trust me, turbo fours sound s
te. I was at the Melbourne F1 GP when they debuted the new turbo fours on the F1 cars and they sounded like drunk mosquitos; you could whisper to your mate at trackside they were so quiet.
There will never be a substitute for the naturally aspirated metallic scream and wail of a flat six at full bottle.
And you can keep your turbo lag and torque curve, no matter how they engineer it. Just don't expect the fancy tech from the 991 Turbo like the variable turbine geometry to filter down to a circa £50-60 Boxster.
I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade but the real collectables are not going to be a double bubble boot and fiddly roof, but 981's with naturally aspirated flat sixes. Grab one while you can!

Have you tried it. Clearly not as quick as sitting in the driver's seat and pressing a button but once you have done it a few times it is pretty easy and quick. Wouldn't want to do it in a thunderstorm though!!

The hood on my Elise was an abortion - and this is worse.
It's loads better than a S1 Elise roof.
And about the same time to fit as the S2 long tail roof.
Only the later no tail roofs on the Elise is faster but then they lost e good looks of the long tail.
But the cars an open top concept , so no idea why the roof is an issue, I keep mine under the spare bed out the way.
Spyders one of today's modern iconic cars, it's such a cool car.

Multiple thousands of 981's for sale? Which country do you live in, because in the UK you'd be hard pressed to find more than a hundred 981.1 3.4S's on the used car market, maybe another hundred 2.7's and then it's slim pickings for the options you want.
Believe it or not, the 981 is a rare car in the UK and the flat six variant 981.1 will be rarer still. In the three years I've been living in Hampshire I have only seen two 981 Boxsters and one 981 Cayman on the road apart from mine. Hardly a common car.

The roof honestly is a really piece of piss. You would have to be a child not to be able to work it out. As soon as I picked up the car I had the roof off in a minute and back up in 2 minutes. Without sounding too much like a spyder fan boy, the whole car was designed to look its best with no roof, although the side view with the roof up does look really mega. It's a true toy which is what I love about it. It could be a dual purpose car, but sitting on motorways cruising to work isn't what this is about.
I know we live in a world of instant gratification nowadays so most people won't get it. I just turned 32 and manually operating a roof takes me back to the old days when my father and I used to play with Austin Healeys, Spitfires and the like. If there was a shower it was a race against time to get the tonneau cover removed, stowed and the hood up. When you are on a weekend blast, does it even matter if you get wet?

but first you have to wait till the 7.2 is beyond the 'just older' category and becomes collectable. Might take 15 years.
I don't have that long, so mine will be going when I get my next one.

Completely agree.
The roof is easy. I'd say an Elise S1 is much more of a faff. The long tail Elise S2 roof I would rate as being the same as the spyder in terms of how long it takes.
There was an argument ages ago about how long it took to do the roof. Search boxster spyder roof on you tube and there is a basic video I put on at the time. Getting out the car, taking roof off and having it all packed away takes less than 60 seconds. It's the same putting it back on.
The humps are just there for styling having removed the weight of the roof mechanism. I personally think it transforms the look of the car to something costing several classes of sport car above.
It makes it unique also, not just a parts bin collection special.

A similar "instructional" video an S1 Elise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou62x1L2zww
suggests it takes little more than half the time to remove the roof on an S1 as a Spyder. I thought the Elise was unacceptable (as much anything it, because it was poor design) but that's me - as a designer (or a different sort) that irks me. But clearly from postings on this forum form is at least as important as function to many posters. (probably more so in this case.) My wife hates high heel shoes for similar reasons.
My other half loves high heel shoes and she looks fit in them, like wise the Spyder look cool.
It,s not transport, like wise high heel shoes you don't go running in.
Normal cars like the 981 now are just transport and in fact quite dull and unexciting.
The Spyder is a toy and it fills that roll very well, as I said I don't use the roof
As a design point of view I would have thought you would have loved it, it's a very clever design that is water tight.
But as you may have found out us Spyder owner tend to drive it open top 95% of the time.
Again as a designer the high heel shoe gives a woman the perfect leg shape, so from a design point of view it's awesome.
Maybe I'll take a picture of my misses getting out my Spyder in a pair of Christian Louboutins and you might get it lol

987.2 more sought after than the 981? Haha! Who's delusional now? The 981 is infinitely better than any 987.1 or 987.2 in so many ways I don't know where to start. I passed over a 987 for a Lotus Evora which IMHO was the best car I owned until the 981.GTS. I tested the 987.2 extensively and found it lacking dynamically and the ergonomics were poor inside a cheap plasticy cabin.
I'm not trying to justify my purchase, each to their own and of course tastes will vary. And I don't mean to disrespect those here with 987s at all. But I do find it amusing how "revered" the Spyder is when to me it's a flawed model and an impractical marketing exercise.
But I do apologise for dragging this thread off topic, sorry.
I find "dynamically" the 987.2 a better drive, but we are all different.
we will not see which car is worth more for another 5 years, the R or the GTS, I put my money on the R still.
I still see the 981 as a A to B audi type car , even the GTS, it does nothing for me, driving one back to back with the R, the R wins hands down for a fun car.
Maybe the GT4 will change all that, but then not many people will get a chance to own one of those.

I can't see it being "most". Any more than most Ferrari owners thinking that "real" Ferraris have 12 cylinders (though probably some still do). Most people will move on and accept the new reality, unless Porsche really cock it up. (Good for most of us if they don't - it will help our secondhand values)
It's not about the engines as I am sure porsche will make a great fl4 turbo but don't think for a minute they won't cock it up just look at the chocolate m96/7.but it is not just about the engine though.
It is not that a 981 is a bad car it's just more Audi /VW than Porsche the 981 even now has a Audi tt rear spoiler and the interior from a Audi saloon!and I won't get started on the exterior !i have bought new 986 then a 987.1 followed by the current 987.2 but the 981 leaves me cold so the gt4 has got to be one special car or might never buy a new porsche again!

Not sure what Audi saloon you have in mind, but while the 981 does have a more "mainstream" interior I wouldn't have said it was particularly Audi. Porsche have adopted a common interior design across all their models both sports and SUV. I personally agree with all the roadtests which praise it for its classy LOOKS. That said I think the ergonomics leave a lot to be desired with too many switches requiring you to divert your gaze too far from the road, and that abortionate handbrake. That said, handbrake apart, I still prefer it to the 987. Both need a decent multifunction wheel as standard.
On the other hand I think the 981 external appearance is definitely preferable to the 987 - in particular the way the spoiler integrates with the rear lights is a step forward.
But then aesthetics are a very personal thing - and I wouldn't allow them to sway me much in buying - it's the way it drives and functions that is all important to me. (I've owned both a Fiat Multipla and a Peugeot 309GTI in the past, - and yes I do think they are both ugly, so I have put my money where....).

I can't see the 987 as being more sought after than a 981, any more than 996 or 997's aren't more sought after than 991's. Of course there will always be those who prefer older Porsche models versus the latest tech but global sales figures would suggest the newer models are in much higher demand.

If you're talking generally I suppose not, but when you pick out special models, they always have a following no matter how good the new version may be.
I would rather a 997 GTS over a base 991 C2S for example, even though the 991 is probably faster and more capable.
And as we are talking Spyders, non of the new 981 range including the GTS has even sparked an interest. Good as they are, the Spyder feels a more special car to own.

Are you just making stuff up now? Please let me know which Audi has the same interior because I haven't seen it.
Also having had a 986 boxster, 987.1 Cayman S with full leather 987.2 Boxster and now a GTS I have to say the interior of the GTS, while not perfect, is light years ahead of any of the other Porsches I have owned.
The 9x6 and 9x7.1( non gt or turbo cars) had a chocolate engines whereas the 9x7.2 has a vastly improved one!

Trust me, I test drove an S3(thinking of going down to one car) before driving the GTS. They are in no way, shape or form similar. I will however concede that some of the rawness has gone from the older cars, not sure you can blame Audi for that though, just market forces and regulations.
just down loaded the latest dvla figures to 3rd quarter 2014 and its so far good news for you manual bgts owners only 13 registered (34 pdk) and cgts 16(70pdk).
so how many of those manuals have sports suspension and ceramics?

So why is that good news? It means that manuals will be rarer - but also that correspondingly fewer people will want them. As now.
