Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

you need to take it to a specialist for a check as it nothing external to check but the first thing that needs checking is the gearbox oil.

When you say check the oil, could it be low, or need changing?

Hi Theo, I took it somewhere and they suggested changing the gearbox oil?

They way they said it was, that'll cost you £200 and if its not that you are looking at £1500 - so I was a bit hesitant and thought he just wanted me to change the oil.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

HI, I have a porsche 996 200 Model Millenium 4S Auto which I have had for 4 years.
It drives fine but in 4th gear it has little power over 2000 revs. It can go into 5th but with little power. I have been driving it in 3rd via the tiptronic gear selection. I wasn't driving it when this happened as I lent it to someone so not sure exactly what happened.
Occassionally it gets stuck in 4th and the light flashes between 'D' and '4'. Then once this has happened it needs to be stopped, put into park, then it is fine.
Any ideas what it is??
Regards, and many thanks!

You in Cyprus! Go to protaras!
This means that for whatever reason the box has dropped into limp mode. One of the more technological forumites should be able to tell you if this leaves a fault code on the computer.
Any other ideas on this guys, any mechanics know anything - I called porsche this morning they want £240 Plus VAT to take a look at a diagnostic?
If I needed a new gearbox would it be totally not drivable?
Regards
It would help if you put a location in your profile then somebody might be able to suggest an indy local to you or if you're lucky you might even find someone with a code reader near you.
You really need to get the codes read to find out what the problem is. Try an independent, such as Jaz in Wembley as they probably won't charge you for reading the fault.
It is very likely electrical or electronic. Perhaps a solenoid valve in the transmission, or the control module, but without the codes there is no way of telling. You won't do any harm driving the car, by the way.
